Post by: shakesgirl on August 09, 2013, 07:02:14 AM
Did they put marbles in the bottom of old oil lamps to keep them from falling over?  I know stupid question. I found one yesterday and I heard a lot of rattling,i opened the bottom and it was filled with marbles. Probably answered my own question  lol.

Yep...someone wanted to weight that!  Like Mart said, post pics of the marbles. They could be worth more than the lamp!

Looks like aggies and cats eyes to me but I am by no means a marble collector. I had the same ones in the 50s

Thank you, but my marbles are not that beautiful. Thanks again. I'd like to find the ones made in Hong Kong. I'd say they probably came from there since the bottom of the lamp says Hong Kong. Those are very beautiful tho.

I e mail the marble collecting to see what they had to say. Who knows. Thank you for the help. Well I've typed in every thing I can about marbles in Hong Kong on bing. Marbles in base of vintage oil lamps, you name it. Just no luck. Maybe that collector will contact me.

I realize my answer above might be mistaken...not a manufacturer!!!  Someone (owner) must have wanted to weight it...or simply had a hiding place for their marbles.  Oh wait....quite a few of us have lost our marbles at some point in time!  :)

Did they put marbles in the bottom of old oil lamps to keep them from falling over

Oil lamps are much heavier when they are only 1/2 full of kerosene. And the weight of the marbles verses the weight of the kerosene is probably not much different.

Now me thinks it was either a kid that put the marbles in the lamp base ..... or a very clever person solving an emergency situation.

Iffen one didn't have any more kerosene ...... and the wick was too short to reach the kerosene level in the lamp ...... and it was past dark and the ghosts n' goblins were starting to come out n' about, ....... then a handful of marbles added to the kerosene in the lamp would raise the kerosene level up so that the wick would suck it up and the lamp could be lit.

Maybe not lit for very long, ....... but long enough to getya to that little shack out back .... and then back.   ;D ;D ;D
