This is not exactly my area !! Supposedly from a Peruvian dig !! No idea where !! Its about 2 1/2in, tall by 4" wide,, thats to the farthest point !! Same color throughout, fairly thick walled,,can see striations on the inside bottom as if coiled construction !!

Not exactly my area either but the wear looks right, and the smooth round bottom and colors....
-
You can tell that it has age !! That bottom is clearly worn to that stage by hand rubbing !! It is not a new pot !! I agree that it looks right but what is it ??
-
I'll toss my guess into the hat ....
Perhaps your item is a dye-pot .
Items such as these were used to hold &/or crush insects (cochineal) & vegetative substances mixed with water , used to dye small amounts of fibers for weaving .
Use of such ware was common in 'pre-spaniard' Mexico (including the Mayans & Aztecs) .... after that , you could say they kinda dyed-out .

Interesting Mart. It does appear to have some age but just how much is tricky without knowing the context it came from. As far as use, I couldn't begin to guess. I am really sorry I can't be more helpful on this but artifacts south of the border are really out of my area also.

from a Peruvian dig?...could just as easily have come from a dig in your neighbours garden....craft shops over here are full of similar ones....they make great ashtrays... :D

Its clearly not an ashtray nor has it been used for one !! Wish I could get a better pic of the inside construction !! It supposedly held something for burial !! I have looked at some items from Peru at auction houses and it does have a resemblance as does the clay it was made from but without knowing the specific area or the culture it came from ,,that's no real help !!

i never said it was an ashtray..... ;)
