Aaahhhhhh...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Many apologies (and thanks) to the kindly regulars, and especially to Mart for PM-ming.

Lots of things going on, with which I will not bore you. One thing I WILL bore you with is that MsGhopper and I are on a historic house tour next month. We've been scrubbing the old manse from top to bottom, and we've got alot more to do! We may not be around much for the next month or so, but I'll be checking in for sure!

In the meantime, we're still rabid about antiques and such. Here's a photo of a recent treasure. I attribute it to Herter Bros. in New York ca. 1870. The satinwood marquetry "plaque" was a frequently used motif.

Luv ya!!

Glad you finally checked in !!   We get nervous when we don`t know if all is well !!  But guess you have a good excuse so I won`t fuss too much !!
That is an absolutely gorgeous bible stand !! Where did you find that one !! I know there is a good story behind it !!
A home tour !!!  Bet you two are excited !!  Since we can`t be there do we get pics ?? I know !! I didn`t mean now,, but at some time ???

Thanks!

We purchased the stand from a shop in Lexington, MO (a beautiful Civil War-era town east of Kansas City). The shop owners are proof that antique shops must continue to exist as brick and mortar operations, because they have taste like no other, taste that you just can't buy over the internet. They pick up the most amazing items ever and have an incredible depth of knowledge. No matter how much you think you know, the couple that runs this shop can always bowl you over!

I can tell you that I definitely attribute the stand to New York from that time period. Nobody around here has seen anything like it before! The top raises and can be propped up for sheet music.......or a bible. We've got a leather bound Dore bible from 1878 on top of it now...which we found at an estate sale for $40.00. Cheers!

We've been told to expect 500+ people to be tramping through our house. I'd be glad to post a photo or two....but maybe they should be "before" photos, eh?   ;D ;D

Awesome, thanks! ;D

The bed was made by R.J. Horner ca. 1890 in New York and the whatnot/etagere by Prudent Mallard in New Orleans ca. 1850.

Tell me about the peacock on the coffee table! I could ask you to tell about lots of things...but better to start with one....

Thank you for sharing...

How did the event go?
Title: Re: anyone heard from ghopper...
Post by: ghopper1924 on August 25, 2013, 11:27:09 AM
Gracias.... ;D

The event doesn't take place until the end of September....we've already been working on the house for the past  month, with another month to go.

The table in front of the sofa was made in Cincinnati ca. 1855. That's a dog on the stretcher under the marble. The bird on the table is not a peacock but a Great Blue Heron, cast in bronze by Mark Hopkins.

Of course coffee tables are pretty much a post WWII invention, so we're using a Victorian parlor table to fulfill that function. We refuse to cut it down, mainly because it would lose half it's value, not to mention IMO violating the craftsman's vision.

The Chinese ladies are not antique at all, and are in fact contemporary. They're made in China by Lin Wei Dung. Unlike most things from China these days the level of craftsmanship is extraordinary.

You might be surprised... ;D
This represents many years of work for MsGhopper and I. We have quite a few family pieces, and many others were found at estate sales for good prices.

Early in this thread you mentioned a Dore bible. Does that contain all of the original prints? I have a single framed one from the early 1900s and I love it. It depicts Jesus falling for the third time. I love all of Gustave Dore's work. That stand is amazing also.

Thanks Frogpatch!

Yep, the bible was published in Philadelphia in 1878 and is chock full of Dore illustrations. Just beautiful! I believe that there were several such bibles in different editions in the 1870s and 80s.

OK, a quick update.

The tour was last Sunday. They projected 500 people and there were between 700-800 all told. I was pinned down in a room to the point where I couldn't get out for 2 hours.

Actually, it was tons of fun. All those people and nothing was broken or stolen.

The other houses on the tour were great as well.

Despite all the work and stress, and MsGhopper hurting her back in the bargain, I'd say we loved it and would do it again.

Neat, cool victorian stand too, glad you enjoyed showing off your collection. Knows ghopper from another furniture forum that has a focus on victorian furniture. Whatever has happened to that forum do you think, John has lost interest perhaps?

Yeah, it was a blast!

Sadly it appears that John lost interest in the "other" forum some time ago.

Yeah, when posts are 1 month or more apart, it kinda kills the whole deal, to bad.

Even though i dont collect victorian any more, i still enjoyed talking old furniture. I still have the first piece of antique furniture i ever bought, an Eastlake library or center table.
