Title: HELP PLEASE!!! Vintage Antique American Soldier Portrait???
Post by: ayden2008 on August 17, 2013, 12:36:02 AM
Hi let me first thank you all for any help with this topic. I recently came across this portrait or painting of an American soldier I believe. Its 14" x 20" in size. I don't know anything about it just that they told me it was old and it sure looks old from the cardboard paper its on. The back says 41/1453? The front is in a sepia style but has red, white, and blue in some type of paint or chalk maybe even pastel. It looks great though and really cool. I just want to know more about it though. Like is era it is from and is that soldier American,  whatever I can find out I would love to know.
Thanks!

Reminds me of the style of wartime posters!

Agree with Mart about the picture frame...did you remove it or get it this way?

I purchased it this way it didn't have the frame. I wish it did! So is this like for more words to do you think the 41 on the back is the year? Did they do this like this back then like in color?

i doubt if the number 41 denotes the year..his uniform is decidedly..first world war....

I agree WWI and it has probably been through several hands since it was done !! I think the numbers are probably from an auction years ago !! Someone bought it that wanted the frame so it was removed and likely replaced by their own family member !!  I have done the same thing !! Those oval frames usually had a curved oval glass front that are not easy to find !!

Wow WW1? Even better than I thought. Any idea on value of like this?I bought it because it just looks amazing and hope to find a frame for it. Oh and sorry about the duplicate postings, my computer did that and I don't know why.

Mart would you consider this a cabinet photo? He could get more money. WW1 photos vary in price according to the subject.

Value would not be a lot !! Partly because its of a person rather than just a decorative piece !! Not many people want to hang someones picture if they are not related !!  And it has some damage !!  My guess would be maybe $30. to $50. if that !!  If you framed it you could sell it but chances are they are buying it just for the frame and the guy would be taken out again !! Maybe you should just use it since its a neat piece of early 20th century Americana !!

What do you mean Greenacres ??

I think it would get more than that just for the nostalgia factor !! There are a few that collect just WWI and WWII items !! Hard to say what the (I want it) factor would be !!

True mart. I've addicted to pininterest's history section. They have great photos and stories. Photos of Atlantic City from 1908. Clothes and bathing suits. Suits on the beach is something I wouldn't have guessed.

I would think it would be in the price range of $20 to $30 just because of the novelty of the red/white/blue...if in fact you can date it from WWI.
