This beautiful piece of Balinese art is one of my favourite pieces.I think it is 1960's. No artist name but very talented. someone told me there is a village that this TYPE of art is painted but no more info found. My girlfriend who passed away told me to remember her whenever i saw a butterfly. I saw this 2 weeks later at a garage sale and started to cry as it had fish and butterflies. The fish represent my family who are fisherpeople. So incredible.Such a lovely piece.

Ah, I see your from the other side of the pond as BigWullie would say. Are there any signatures anywhere that you notice? Back or front?
-

Maybe under the frame. Our country is only just over 200 years old so antiques here are mainly enlish and european that others have bought back fron O/s trips.I have been an avid collector 4 over 30 years.Vast range of goodies.plus I buy and sell on ebay

Does it have a glass front ?? Done on paper or ???
-
No glass front but it appears to be a type of felt or something.
-
Can you take a close up on the material ??
-
Is it painting on velvet? That was popular in the 60's to 70's!

definately not canvas, it is a type of material and a watercolour!
-
Watercolor would not work on fabric !! Looks almost like barkcloth !! Does it have a nobby uneven feel ??
-
yes it does feel rough almost like felt

https://www.google.com.au/search?q=art+from+Keliki&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=uBMUUquPBqqSiQfZ9IG4BA&ved=0CFUQsAQ&biw=1846&bih=995
Seems I googled art in Bali and remembered there is a village that specializes in art.So here is Keliki art. Now just find the artist might prove more difficult
-
It isn`t felt,, its a woven fabric !! I can see the weave !!
-
You might look through this site and see the traditional Balinese textiles !! I am not sure yours is from Bali,,perhaps another area of Indonesia !!
-
I got it from the lady who had the vietnamese bodhi leaf paintings.. Maybe none are what they seem.lol
-
Problem with things like this is that they are done all over that area and sold as tourist items !! Its cottage industry there !! They do what sells and its not always what is typical for their culture !!
-
Looks like I may never know the artist .I do know it was 1960's. I know it will always be my favourite piece of art for it's unique subject and the reminder my best friend is alway's near :)
Thank"s for the help
-
That is certainly how you should remember it, and always keep it with you !! Its a beautiful piece and we are sorry for your loss !! And in that context,, knowing the artist is really unimportant !! Knowing and remembering your friend is !!!
-
Any chance your item is batik , Ma ?
-
Thanks so much Mart yes it is not important but like you I love researching and have plenty of time on my hands. My children asked me to let them know what is what so
i started putting all my "stuff" in a catalogue with what I know about each item. It's been fun. Then when i'm gone they can decide what to do with it. My daughter abso9lutely loves this piece so i know it will not be sold. i don't get attached to "stuff" like some collectors but this one is special.
Thanks for helping everyone
Not Batik fancypants but I have found an artist whose work resembles this one. When I find the link I shall post.

This is similar work.I can't translate the page. It's in french. Seem it says monkeys.Muted tones are there but am I guessing.Does it have a signature.Anyone translate French for me..
-
It says Ida Bagus is the artist s name !! Couldn`t see the whole pic but looks a different style to me !!
Hard to tell Fancy if this was done with a paint technique or batik !! Looks like vegetable dyes but not sure of their method !! This and the link that was posted are given as contemporary art so fairly modern !!
