Title: Cast-Iron toy John Deere Tracktor stamped "JOHN DEEPE"
Post by: myracles103 on August 21, 2013, 11:27:58 AM
I have had this sitting on a shelf for years and today was trying to find another one just like it and realized it is stamped "John Deepe," instead of John Deere. I cannot find a single one like it anywhere and have been browsing for quite a while now. Anybody know anything about it? Is it an error or a knockoff? Is it valuable?

Thanks for helping!

It is a repo or "knockoff".

The name of the maker/manufacturer is important to collectors ..... so repo'ers will copy the design but spell the "name" with one (1) letter/character being diifferent to prevent being sued for forgeries ..... and/or to fool the "newbie" and/or unsuspecting buyers into thinking it is an original..

I have seen ceramic pieces with the name spelled wrong. When we 1st started dealing in "collectibles" the wife bought a tall blue n' white pitcher which looked really great ..... except the "name" in the "mark" was misspelled.

That being said,, there are a few collectors that specialize in fakes, forgeries, and errors !!

Well given advice above!

Here is a good article on repro's or fakes

Yes it's a knock-off, John Deere makes the exact one with their name in it as well.  But Mart is right there about people specializing in knock-off and foreigns. It's a pretty big market now days and some people pay well for certain items. I specialize in vintage toys and when I get knock off Star Wars Figures they go faster than the originals!

This was originally posted in 2013.  It was sometime last year that we had a major hiccup/crash on the site and once it was fixed the older postings pictures were gone.
