Title: Help Identifying Primitive Oil Lamp???
Post by: ayden2008 on August 22, 2013, 08:54:07 AM
I recently got this what seems to be very old antique oil lamp. Like fun the primitive age. I see other old oil lamps online but can't find any like this. It has a hallmark at the bottom which I included a picture of and seems to be a figure of a man straddling the wick part of the oil lamp. Its about 3" in height x 4 1/2" in width. Can anybody please help me with more information on my find!?

Appears to be a chalkware reproduction of a whale oil lamp !!

Definitely an oil lamp.

However, there are so many out there....  Looks to be a "modern" item with the imprint.

Is the inside of this glazed ?? If not it wouldn`t be an oil lamp because any clay material such as unglazed porcelain, pottery, stoneware would be porous and would soak up the oil !!

No its not glazed mart. And so maybe its a repop that they did with the hallmark to pass it off as real?

Or,, not a lamp and something else entirely !!

That doesn't look like a man but some kind of animal. It looks like it should have been to be painted in detail. Like Mart said, it may have been intended for a different purpose but I do not know what.

If it were an oil lamp then it looks as if it has hardly, if ever, been used. You would expect some sort of carbon deposit from the flame.

Hello again one and all!

I think this was made in Italy whatever it is !! The mark on the bottom looks to me like a building !! What is the one in Rome with the statues, kind of circular ??  My brain is on vacation !!  At least that's what I see !!

Are you thinking of the Colosseum, Mart?
Looking at that stamp, I am thinking more down the lines of the Parthenon, on the Acropolis.

Looks like the Porch of the Maidens from the Acropolis in Athens.

If true, it obviously points to a Greek origin for this item.

Female figures holding up a portico roof are known as carayatids. I think the original on the Acropolis was designed by Iktinos and Calicrates.

The Acropolis is the actual ancient  'city', and the building that we all generally think of when we hear 'acropolis' is actually the Parthenon, just one of the buildings that make up the Acropolis, a Temple built to worship the Goddess Athena .... I'm half Greek and half Italian, and trod those ancient stones every summer for probably the first 10 years of my life (some might suggest not long after the initial construction!)   ;D ;D ;D

Injustice.....and here I was awhile back, starting threads for my bullyboy Wullieboy about how he's contributed so much, and awarding him karma points and everything.
