Title: what makes a signature
Post by: sugarcube5419 on August 27, 2013, 07:54:58 AM
bought a pretty pottery plate, it is initialed on the back no signature on the front, does it matter if its a full signature or initials and if its on the front or the back?

Hi,
I wouldn't worry too much about the signature. It is clearly impressed with Monroe Salt Works and there are plenty of examples of their pottery out there. A pie dish with the same pattern seems to have been sold recently on Ebay.

Not bad prices !!  They likely had many decorators and each would have initialed their work !!  If it had been initials alone without a company name,, you could say it was an independent or ceramic shop piece !!
