I went to my local skip today when a man got out off his car and placed two large boxes down, i had a look in when he left and this caught my attention
i have no idea of the hallmarks, the age or value i was hoping to get some help there :)
it has a silver top, with glass stopper inside pretty sure the body is glass
the 1st hallmark is like an icon then W, the second is a lion, 3rd looks like a shield, 4th is a lower case f

Certainly looks a nice find, and the glass stopper seems intact, is it all in good condition?
Will need a clearer pic of the hallmark, though
-
Glass needs a wipe, silver needs a good polish but there's no real damage on it, what a thing to throw away pics coming up in a sec

It is a London Hallmark, probably 1901 and the silversmith was P.W
Percy Horace Arthur Whitehouse
-
If the glass is in very good condition, as well as the silver collar and lid, then that was anywhere between £30 - £60 that he threw away, and you've found.... well done!
-
Mario54...not so sure about the hallmark.
Looks more like Phillip Woodman & Sons to me! The lettering is different style on Whitehouse. There were actually 3 very popular silver makers in London at this time with a P.W!
Consider this Whitehouse hallmark...very different!

By-the-way...very nice finds!!!! Both are keepers!!

Thanks for the info and quick response i will get it cleaned up and see if i can find it a home where it can be appreciated, there was also a old beaten up clock in the box, its wind up and says "tempus fugit" wooden case is beaten up but appears to be gold plated with some nice designs
-
You could be right, KC, I was taking it from two different sources, but with this one you can compare (not as easy as it seems, but I was also thinking about the date)

It's be interesting to see a photo of that ... and there is a forum that specialises in clocks if you're interested
-
Well i will post some photos here and if you think its worth it i will ask the clock people ;D
I already know the woodwork will need restored but the clock works fine and there is no other damage

PS, just got a 2nd opinion on the silver hall mark in the picture it looks like PW but after the magnifying class came out it seams to be a very small "N" in the top left then a small triangle just before the large "W"
-
Hi,
It's not a striking clock (only the one hole) but that's all I can tell from the front, you need to take a photo of the inside. There is often a maker's mark somewhere on the works, even a label inside the rear door. Is there a pendulum? Don't worry about the key you can always get replacements.
If no-one here can help then certainly the NAWCC forum will be a worthwhile visit
-
No pendulum all cogs, in very poor condition but will do abit of research
-
Scent bottle - it's not P.W It's something " & W ". The first part of the mark is badly rubbed.
-
Having blown it up, I'm still pretty certain it is a P, but looks like it's taken a bit of a knock so it looks split
-
Nope. On the photobucket site you can enhance it twice.
It's also an ampersand, not a full stop
-
Hope this helps, so in top condition top estimate £60? may keep it, only 19 but i do like a bit of history

When it was struck, the whole logo wasn't imprinted!
Can't find a partial on file like this. Maybe someone else will....
-
I think it's a retailers mark and not listed on the hallmarks / assayers sites.
It's not really relevant to the value anyway. Pretty standard late Victorian scent bottle
-
Perfume bottle you ask... O.K. here's a stupid question.... Did you smell it? Usually if perfume was in it the scent lasts decades.
-
Yeah, it has a very fruity smell ;D
-
They are most definitely old perfume bottles, with or without the scent, but it's a bonus that it is sweet! ;)
-
great question peaceman
-
As rough looking as the silver covered appears...and the unusual design...I am betting this one fit inside a glass piece or other covering.
What is the size of it?
