Title: One for Wendy maybe. Is this Chinese?
Post by: mariok54 on September 13, 2013, 08:54:40 AM
Hi All,
I've been looking at some Lots for an Auction that's coming up and this bowl caught my eye. It's a translucent cloisonne bowl, and the decoration includes swans, leaves, and flowers (sorry that the pic isn't so good). They have no idea where it's from and have labelled it as European (maybe because of the Swans). I've only ever seen ones like this from China. There's no estimate at all, for some reason. What do you think about it? I like it, but not sure whether to go for it.

Japanese, plique-a-jour.

In my opinion.

Doesn't matter. Found it  ;)

Judging by your post on Tales's thread, we're not a million miles apart! You are Notts  I think? I'm Derbys!

I like the bowl. Will have to take a closer look but i expect it's not that old, though well made.
The auction house - i know well. They have two sites in different places in Lincolnshire. Catalogue most things very well. They also have a large customer base which helps items achieve the right price, and all their auctions are online ( though only the specialist items are available for live internet bidding ) but i do buy from there and sell for profit. Bit naughty but  ;D

I think if anyone is thinking of consigning their antiques to auction then it has to be a good auction house and internet bidding is a MUST. Items don't have to be in Christies or Sothebys these days. Many provincial salerooms are achieving similar prices but charging less commission, but all have internet bidding

You are right Ipcress ... I still try to look for the Auctions that aren't on the Internet Live.  But larger items still don't attract the volume of bidders on-line, especially if the Auctioneers don't do in-house  P&P  because of the silly prices that Mailboxes charge, But I still manage to buy a few bits from these Auctions and sell for a small profit, generally on Ebay.

Hi Melodie,

So you are a Lincolnshire Lass then? I'm Derbyshire, about 5 miles from Matlock Bath! I've never been there to bid in the flesh, but have won a few Lots with Commission bids, and they're a decent Auction House.

Well, I'm not sure why that pic got posted here? I just posted it on the Meat Grinder thread!!!!

I tried to bid on-line, but our IT Dept seem to have done something over the Summer, I can access the Auction via Saleroom.com, but the window just freezes on the first image   :(    the same when I tried using my own laptop!

Sorry you missed it with your PC trouble Mario.

I'm actually a Yorkshire lass living in Notts but not far from Lincs border. Got the best of all worlds. I absolutely love Matlock Bath. Used to be one of the pesky tourists that invaded on Sundays on back of boyfriends motorbike. Do they still do that? It was a very long time ago  ;D

Hope you get your IT sorted and back to bidding successfully soon.

Hi Melodie,

It's only a work thing at my college...

And every Sunday, come Rain or shine, the bikes still roar into Matlock Bath and still park on the same section of the A6. I think it's quite cute. I'm just the other side of Cromford so Matlock is a regular haunt. Bamfords used to have a brilliant Auction House there, in the old Cinema I think. That was the place to go to pick up bargains as they weren't on the Internet, and because of the number of antique shops in Matlock, the competition meant they had to buy  as cheap as they could, and so that probably depressed prices. they've now moved to Rowsley, to premises in the retail park, and are on-line, so not much gets missed  :(

They're not great with their cataloguing at Bamfords. Golding Young in Lincoln are better and it's easy to get to.

Not being great at cataloguing can be useful if you can go to the viewings. Where I am, both the Bamfords Houses are equally easy for me to get to. Goldings is a bit of a drive.

Yeah but i look for certain words and Golding Young usually take good photographs. Things can be in boxes at Bamfords so, yes, if you're viewing them it can be fun. Online it's not so good.
