Cleaning out my FIL's old trailer after he passed and stumbled upon this very large meat grinder. The belt spins freely, though I don't know if the motor runs or not. There are several parts and pieces there in the top bin. Any ideas on what it's worth should I decided to sell it? And yes that's a full size whiskey barrel to the right. ;D

Thanks!

Does,nt look like a 50 gal whisky barrel to me....
-
I was more implying that it wasn't a half barrel as that's what you see around here more often. I don't really know it's true size.
The grinder does have a GE electric motor if I remember the correctly.
-
btw....Welcome.....
-
Thanks... Really just trying to determine if it's worth selling or if dismantling for scrape iron is the way to go....
Haven't been able to find a single picture of one like it. For all I know it could be cobbled together by my FIL.
-
Not cobbled together !! Looks like a commercial grinder for a butcher shop if its as big as it looks !! And the barrel looks to be 50 gal. or close to it !! Is anything written or stamped on the grinder ??

if that barrel,s a 50 ....then i,m going to learn Mandarin....a 50 gal barrel is 4ft high...and that does,nt look 4ft

If the grinder has the plates and knives, I bet some deer hunter would be glad to give a couple hundred bucks (non-cervidae species :D) for it.
-
If you were from New Jersey you would know that the barrel and the grinder go together. That is a witness removal kit. These old ones were good because they were bio-degradable. The new ones have plastic drums that take up room in the landfills.
-
Did the cement overcoat come along later ?? Didn`t think about that, Frogpatch,, !! Looks too big for a nail keg !!
-
Frogpatch your reminding me of the wood chipper in the movie "Fargo". Or maybe it knows where " Jimmy Hoffa" is!
-
Welcome!
May I ask who said it was a meat grinder?
Can you take a better picture looking down inside please?
-
The size of the "drive" belt amazes me.
And yes, anyone who processes their own beef, pork or deer like those old commercial grinders.
-
Topic provider thinks its a grinder....i,d call it a mincer.....
-
Eat veg or a Beef alternative ;D
-
Not as uncommon as you may think....yum, yum...or maybe...puke..... ;D

Looks like the ones that are in smaller processing plants here !!
-
Have you seen the new commercial/game The Scarecrow for Chipotle that my son/his company Moonbot did? It was just release last week... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUtnas5ScSE

Food for thought.....just recently over here....Organic chicken that was for sale in a well known supermarket....pare nt company in the US...said chicken was found to contain DNA from...a cow and a pig....turned out that the suppliers who are in Holland sent this "Organic Chicken "..to Germany...for bulking....i.e. chicken injection.....like in what i just watched....then a few weeks ago..there was a full page article in a national paper....relating to ....how to feed the masses with genetically engineered food....they called it Soylent....but no mention of the ..Green.....as in the film Soylent Green.......Grace Slick & Kanter Paul spring to mind.....
Where are the bodies for dinner?
I want my food!
You could leave to dine on
your friends - pour their
bones into a cannibal soup
muscles like steak
blood like wine - save
the brains to feed to troops
-
Ooops !! No fried chicken tonight !!

Sorry I helped get off the thread...
Again, who told you it was a meat grinder?
Also, a pic from the top please.
I have a feeling it could have another application.

No one told me it was a meat grinder. I made the assumption looking at it and based on what I now of other meat grinders. I will not be able to get back to it until later, probably next weekend (28th) to make more pictures of it (sorry). What else might you think it is?
-
Considering how its made I think it is a meat grinder !! May have different blades and fittings for making/stuffing sausages ect !!

Maybe KC's concern is similar to mine.
If it was simply for grinding hamburger ........ there is no reason for it having that 4" to 4 1/2" drive belt for powering the grinder.
A 3/4" to 1" V-belt drive would surely suffice.
-
When you get back to take a look, look for ANY markings, etc on it please.
I just have never seen one that required that big of belting like cogar said. (Not to say that I have seen everything!)
Also, look at the exit flume. Does it have a grate/strainer over it at the main compartment or look as if it has had one?

The V-belt is a relative modern innovation, dating back to WWI era.

Ah so, ..... that puts a date on the grinder. Like pre-1920. ;D ;D
-
Meat Grinder/Mincer.....is what it is....not just for burgers...more like half a coo....if yer looking for a burger sized one...then this one will do nicely..... ;D
-
