Title: can you help me with this 18th century porcelain piece
Post by: phildaint on October 07, 2013, 01:51:20 PM
As mentioned in the title, i was giving my grandparents a hand sorting out their attic and they showed me my grans family air loom. we have no idea what exactly it is were looking at other than it being a pretty piece andy they were intrigued to find out a bit about it. I believe it was passed down to my gran from her gran (unsure if it had been handed down before that or not)

Anyway, just wondering if anybody knows anything about this piece to give us an idea at what were looking at? i grabbed a few snaps on my phone but the makers logo seems fairly faint

These are usually late 19th, sometimes early 20th. German / Bohemian. Bisque, quite brittle. Not really popular at the moment.
This " Dandy " was likely part of a pair with a lady

I really can't read the mark, but do remember some German bisque dolls would have a "G dep" mark. I believe it stood for "Gesetzlich deponirt", which basically meant the design was registered.

Perhaps find your mark here at http://www.porcelainmarksandmore.com/thuringia/graefenthal_3/00.php (http://www.porcelainmarksandmore.com/thuringia/graefenthal_3/00.php)

Look under http://www.porcelainmarksandmore.com/thuringia/graefenthal_3/00.php

However, note sure if this is a reproduction or original.

Perhaps Chris, our resident expert, will pop by and lend an eye on this one!

There's also the Grafenthal mark.

But let's see what the expert says...

In this case all hints point toward the VEB Porzellanfiguren Gräfenthal.

Hi mart,

February 1st next year is PM&M's tenth birthday and I have been completely re-designing and re-coding the site for that occasion. Still only halfway through, but I work best under pressure ;)
