Title: Antique Lantern
Post by: BoxHunter on October 23, 2013, 07:28:15 PM
Hi guys, was helping a friend unpack some old boxes when we stumbled upon this old lantern. It has no name inscription or any brand identity that we can find. The glass is real and appears to be a brass frame. The inside is all lined with mirrors and the back (flat metal back) has a hook for hanging. Any information of this lantern would be very much appreciated. We are really just looking for some information! Unfortunately we do not have much information to share on this item. No idea where it came from or about how old it could be. That being said we hope you guys can help :)

Of course! Here are some pictures of the front (a bit hard to get a picture of the inside because of the mirror), the side and the back. It appears there was once a plaque on the back that has been peeled away (gray spot on back).

I think she meant 1980`s !!  And I agree !! An older piece would not have that ply type wood on back and for use would not have red lenses !! The spot on back was probably a paper label for imports !!

Just because you see a plywood back...does not mean it can,t be old...Plywood has been around for a lot of years...a simple form..dating back to the time of the Egyptian Pharoahs...but Plywood as we know it..was invented in 1850...and its use in furniture making in the US...started around 1928....furthermore ...the fact that it has a candle holder and not...a an electric cable...adds credance to it being a bit older than 1980/90

This looks like a lot of the Moroccan lanterns sold by import places like Cost Plus and Pier 1. It may be vintage and not antique, but they are really beautiful when you put a light in them. For safety, you can get battery or electric flicker lights that do a good job of imitating a natural flame. Available for a few bucks on eBay

1980's and 1990's is what I was meaning!!!!

Older functional lanterns would be metal.  The mirrors look even/not wavy in nature nor the glass!
