I got this cast iron gold tone last supper fire back plate or plaque with cut outs. I can't make out the stamp on the back and can't get a good picture of it. It says something prod inc. Trying to figure out age, origin and value. Can't find an other one on the web like it. Measures approx. 14" x 8 1/2 ".
-
its origin..is the easy part....it was part of a cast iron fireplace...that..i s probably no longer in one piece...and then someone sprayed it gold and had it hanging on a wall,....date wise...early 1900....value if stripped of all that crap....then blackened and polished with zebrite....could see it fetching £100+....or more to a religeous fanatic.... :D
-
Nice! I got it for $5.99. It's a nice piece but very heavy.

Very heavy...I should bloody well hope so....after all its cast iron...do yourself a favour...either try and strip that s***..off or get it shot blasted,...then paint it black with matt black metal paint..and then polish it with zebrite...and then for that extra touch mount it on a nice piece of wood...with a margin of approx 2in all round...then punt it...or leave it unmounted and it,ll still fly off the shelf...
-
I bet you are right. We have a lot of gold fanatics in this area, they paint everything gold. lol
-
Scratch a small place on the back and see if its white under the paint !! I think its plaster, not cast iron !! We had the same plaque back in the 50`s hanging in our dining room !! About the same weight as cast iron and often mistaken !!
-
well this is the prime example of...."all that glitters is,nt Gold"
-
It is for sure cast iron not plaster. There is some scratched paint on it. Metal all the way.
-
Way too small for a fireplace then !! Are you sure its metal ??
-
pays to check previous posts...."what part of metal all the way"..did,nt you get ;D...as for being way too small...its not...mines has a back plate of 16in x 9.1/2....this one here...is 14in x 14in....i,ve also seen bigger ones...and smaller ones.....it could also be part of the hood....of a cast iron insert...
-
Because the one we had in the dining room was also gold..identical !! Is there a way to hang it ?? Can`t think of any company that would have put the Lords Supper on an item intended for a fire !! Very disrespectful !!
-
Disrespectful you say....through who,s eye,s....i can think of far worse things that have been done....with religeous items....than sticking this on a fire...If indeed that,s what it is....but having said that....there are many more where this one came from....

-
I have seen some old plaques like this that were actually surrounded by framing...but not with the cut out sections. The cut out make me think candle, fire...like indicated above for the stoves.
But this one is cast iron? Heavy? Not just metal?
-
That silvery gray color does not look like cast iron,, more like spelter !!
-
What grey?..we have gold pent, with ..."your words"..white underneath....but now you,re saying cast iron is,nt grey...where do you see that....as for KC,s comment...
"but this one is cast iron"....not just metal....Argh!!...Screammmmmmmmm!!....what is cast iron,.....Metal....and....its Heavy....Then back to cheapo cheater Mart....Its Spelter....LOL!!.....who,s went from plaster to spelter...any advance.....resin perhaps, ;D
-
Cast iron comes in gray and black. This pings so is not plaster. Check out this picture. This is a cast iron item I just sold on Ebay.
-
So glad that we are keeping your blood pumping today Wullie! :) Just trying to help figure it out...not out to send you reeling big guy!
There were "other metals" used that aren't as heavy as cast iron and if someone is familiar with items of different metals, (which I am guessing that Icedgolf10 is fairly knowledgeable from the items she has been exposed to/sells, etc).

Just for fun here is the definition
Grey cast iron
Main article: Grey iron
Grey cast iron is characterised by its graphitic microstructure, which causes fractures of the material to have a grey appearance. It is the most commonly used cast iron and the most widely used cast material based on weight. Most cast irons have a chemical composition of 2.5–4.0% carbon, 1–3% silicon, and the remainder is iron. Grey cast iron has less tensile strength and shock resistance than steel, but its compressive strength is comparable to low and medium carbon steel
-
Whoopeeeeeeee!!...common sense prevails at last....Grey...is grey...and this is t,other...my good friend...Alfred Gray.....without... an e,... ;D..are you absorbing this Mart??......
-
Yes I know that cast iron before its seasoned is gray !! I have had a few cast iron skillets !! And I am threatening to throw one all the way to Scotland !!! :D
-

Grey cast iron
Most cast irons have a chemical composition of 2.5–4.0% carbon, 1–3% silicon, and the remainder is iron.
And for some more fun, ;D ;D .... the old cast iron contained potassium which made the liquid iron more fluid so that it would flow into all sections of those intricate molds before it would harden up.
That is why all of the repro kitchen gadgets, etc. are being made in Mexico, etc.
-
Oh KC !!! That's terrible,,want to borrow my shopvac ?? !! All we got was a couple of good showers !! Little less than 2" !! Ponds are full !! Maybe the rain will help my turnips & greens !!
-
Yep Cogar...remember about that potassium!
Mart, we stomped towels for hours last night soaking up and have lots of fans going! Been raking leaves and picking large limbs up. Just had the roofers leave...ceiling in office and laundry room are wet from a slight ongoing leak that became a big one yesterday...(They couldn't find it in the past with the new roof...found it now and have to repair the roof/ceilings/walls.) Some of my favorite rose bushes were broken to pieces! :) But all are safe and things can be fixed!!! So, life is good!
-
Stuff can always be replaced !! Glad everyone is OK !!
-
Been there before. Glad you are ok because that is what counts. Things can be fixed a little at a time.
-

-
Did you notice the size of those Wullie ?? I did !!! ;D
-
Yes I noticed the size....but had you taken the time to look at Coalbrookdale you would have seen that they made 2 Huge one,s...one of which is in their museum in Shropshire..in England and the other was sold in America...but they also made various smaller one,s like this one
LEONARDO DA VINCI'S FAMOUS PAINTING OF THE 'LAST SUPPER' WAS COPIED BY MANY ARTISTS IN A WIDE RANGE OF MATERIALS. BY THE EARLY 19THC CENTRAL EUROPEAN FOUNDRIES WERE PRODUCING EXAMPLES IN CAST IRON AND BY THE 1830'S SIMILAR PLAQUES WERE BEING PRODUCED BY THE COALBROOKDALE COMPANY, SHROPSHIRE, THIS PLAQUE IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF THE IRONMASTERS SKILL OF THE PERIOD AND THE PLAQUES WERE ALSO SHOWN AT THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF 1851. THEY WERE POPULAR WITH LOCAL HOUSES AND CHURCHES. MOST EXAMPLES WERE POLISHED TO RESEMBLE STEEL, THEY WERE ALSO PRODUCED IN A BRONZE FINISH AND SOMETIMES PAINTED AND GILDED, THIS EXAMPLE IS BRONZE. THE PLAQUE MEASURES APPROX 26 3/4" X 14 3/4" AND HAS STEEL TAGS ON THE UPPER EDGE FOR SECURE WALL ATTACHMENT. IT WEIGHS OVER 9 KILOS. IT HAS NO DAMAGE. THERE IS MINOR FLAKING TO THE BRONZED PATINA.
-
You tell them Bigwull! :)
-
Have seen them...but did you find another one with the cutout areas?
-

-
Oh!!.....yes please....i,ll have this one....can you make sure i,ll get it by Christmas...lots of hugs

And what is this ?? A group you don`t have ??
I think its just missing the paint KC !!
-
Your kind of Skillet...would,ve hurt ma pare wee heid...my kind of Skillet wid only damage my already damaged lugs...which for me is the lesser of twa evils... ;D
-
LOL !! I meant what is that CD ?? Never saw it before !!
-
Okay people....I have on my specs! Go back and look at pic 1 and pic 2. There are places next to Jesus and John/Mary, Judas, etc... that are open work areas-no metal and you can see the material that the piece is sitting on (improperly stated as cut outs). Even when flipped over...you can see the openwork areas. This is unique!!!
I'm not sure what this is called in metal work but it is called fretwork in ornamental wood work!
-
If there is anything thats unique on here....its you....A bloody trinket box ...1in in dia.....eh dinna ken!! ;D
-
