Jacob Rosenzweig - later Rosenzweig, Taitelbaum & Co
London 1916

However, i am concerned about the marks in the first picture. They are incredibly sharp and fresh looking, especially when compared to the item in general and the other marks.

What is the black line round that area ?

Can i see an image of the whole item, so as to compare with their other stuff ?

This reminds me of a Victorian baby rattle is why I asked!!!  They would be made in silver and for the "well-to-do"!

However, if it opens...it reminds me of 2 things!!!  A Judaica Victorian spice box!!!  AKA Spice Tower!  or a Judaica incense Besamin holder!

Used in Jewish ceremony!

"Blessing over the spices
A special spice box filled with fragrant herbs (besamim) is used to represent the redolence of Shabbat (the spices commonly used are cloves, cinnamon, or bay leaves). Since smelling spices helps distinguish special fragrance from the more ordinary, part of the reason for the besamim box is to illustrate another separation of the sacred from the profane. The following blessing is said upon smelling the spice box"

My advice would be to search google for other period pieces made by Rosenzweig. Then look at Ebay and wonder why the same seller in Israel is trying to sell elaborate pieces which look dubious in nature.

I have serious doubts as to the authenticity of this item, Art. Ignoring the style for a second, some of it looks well polished and subject to lots of rubbing...then those marks appear like they were stamped yesterday.

Try making a paste of baking soda and water and gently rub it off!! :)  The important word here is GENTLY!!!!

Only if this doesn't work try acetone (nail polish remover) ON A Q-Tip and only on the area with ink - GENTLY rub.
