Title: copper flagon
Post by: daxu on November 10, 2013, 06:34:01 AM
Hi,

Bought this from a carboot sale today. For me it is quite pretty and I guess it is not something old as I didn't pay much.

Can someone identify the age?

Many Thanks

would,nt call this a flagon...and i won,t be my normal tactless self...for fear that you might live close, seeing as you must be on my side of the pond..and might want to hit me on the noggin with it........Mmm!!...old yes,.... pretty....well,....if you say so... :D

I don't really know what it is, so I googled some images that look bit like this and just used the names from there.

For me, it can't be a teapot (unless for suicide), can't be a watering can (as the hole is just too small). So I guessed it is something to do with wine?

 :D

Can you see any usage staining/wear inside?

looking at that first pic, there looks like there should be something else in the top,..i,m thinking this has something to do with coffee making,

This is what looks like inside. I guess there are some usage signs?

Coffee making? Could be.

The carving looks like a Dragon, so I am guessing it is something from China or Japan.

They don't really drink coffee until recently, isn't it?

may i suggest you fill it with water..to determine how much it holds, from that last pic, that colour looks like verdi-gris,..although it may have been tinned, and if so, then it has been used as a receptacle, for liquid,

The guy from car boot sale said it is made of copper and brass.

It holds like one glass of water (around half a pint to 1 pint I think?).

I will ask my Chinese friends to see if they know what it is.

Inside is not tinned so that would eliminate food or beverage !!  Doesn`t look like it would have had a lid !! My guess would be something for the bath !! An oil perhaps !!

Mart, I was pondering if it was for oil...but the picture of the spout (if I am correct is flat) would drip down the container terribly after pouring!

wooo!

Really impressed.

After knowing the name, it is much easier to search.
See this ebay item:

Other than the lid, the item is 100% same.
