Trying to put a date area to this. It is cloth with some sort of gesso or something so that the charcoal could be put on it. The frame is carved wood. Will need restoration work of course. Trying to figure out why someone wrote on the wood in pencil the numbers 1145. Can someone help me identify period and style?

by the style of his hair, and his clothing...and his cravat..i,d say mid 19th century...as for the penciled numbers...could be someones pin number for their ATM card. :D
-
Now if I can only get the card to go with that pin. haha ;D

Icedgold, I am just going to give my impression of this,,,somewhere between 1850 and 1880 or so !! Looks like this lady may have been a Quaker,,Pennsylvania area or there about !! Go down and read the post about Help dating a sculpture !! Look at the sculpture,,compare the two just for the heck of it !! Similar look !!

Very interesting, Mart. This head must have been popular. lol

Just talking about an overall look the ladies had Wullie !!

I found it interesting when I was at an antique store a couple of months ago I came out and found a Quaker woman taking a picture of my license plate. My plate says "HAPPYNS" she found it amusing. Very nice lady. Didn't realize there were some still around these days.

Bigwull, here in the U.S. the lines can be blurred sometimes. haha Had many times I have stood there debating if it was a male or female in front of me. I really hate when a guy does his makeup better than me. lol
