Title: Chinese mother of perl carving?
Post by: daxu on November 24, 2013, 11:29:16 AM
The seller said it was bought from 1950s. So the item has to be before that (Of course if what she said was true).

There is a small crack and was glued back by the look of it.

I checked ebay and some auction sites, seems those Chinese mother of perl carving are quite similar to mine(But I believe every expensive thing is same as mine anyway)

Any idea about age?

Look carefully with a loop and see if there are irregularities in the carving.  If so, it is hand carved.  They make carved MOP items these days with laser...so the etching/cuts are precise and even.

Hard to date this.  They have been popular for hundreds of years.  One of those that needs a "hands on" inspection from someone who knows about the item.

Nice piece!

Indeed.

We have cameras but somehow they always go out of battery when I want to use them :D

From the carving, all I can see is that there are eight famous Chinese Immortals (on the top), who are fighting the sea creatures (the guy on a giant shrimp, the guy on a giant fish and guy riding the dragon)

Yesterday I watched a program which showed a mother of pearl carving with the same eight immortals but doing some different things. Apparently the one in the program was made before 1900.

Really hope I could be that lucky.

Taking the batteries out of the camera between uses will save your battery life !! Mine will only last a few times with regular batteries,, alkaline batteries will last for months !!
