Title: Odd, pre-clumbian (?) relic?
Post by: capn on November 24, 2013, 04:19:03 PM
Someone local has this object and it intrigues me. Not sure if anyone here knows about this stuff...but here is the info he has:

it looks like gold/or bronze or the ancient metallurgy known as Tumbaga (orchilcum)... gold/copper smeltg or gold silver ?? it has patina(black) it doesn't attract to a magnet and is quite heavy. Has no seams. Looks like a woman/goddess? and has a strirrup (round band) on top of the head?

I don't know how big it is.

Based on this and the pics doesn't anyone have any ideas? Does this look authentic? value?

Thanks guys! Just curious

Don't think it is pre Columbian.  All I have seen from then is pottery.  I don't think they had a way to mold metals.  The paint they used was made from berries.  The style is pre Columbian but not made during that time period.

Thanks!
Do you think this is a modern reproduction or something that is older?

It appears to be in that style but not that old !! Looks like part was sand cast but around the arms and breasts looks to have been attached later after the main body cooled !! My opinion is its a fairly modern made tourist item trying to look older and made of mostly brass !!
