Title: Antique silver mark
Post by: icedgold10 on December 16, 2013, 08:23:13 PM
I picked this up tonight at Goodwill for $1.99.  I thought it was a tin frame.  I looked more closely when I got home and found it is silver on wood (2 separate pieces).  Can someone help me with the mark?  Maybe Gorham silver?  Trying to find age and value?  Sell or keep for a bit value wise?  Continental style?

I'm having a hard time seeing your frame.  Can you please take another picture in "natural" sunlight?  Maybe the pictures will show up better!

(In Florida and the internet isn't really great where I am...plus the reflection on the frame!)

Maybe someone else can chip in!

the pics open up well and i get a good close up shot ..yes, i see JD WD then an Anchor, then Lion then a small g....which would indicate its silver,..but what is confusing is the copper tones that are showing through on the left just above the mark..which is indicative of it being silver plate on copper..

I think that's my flash.  I am working on the tarnish.  But I did find it here http://www.rubylane.com/item/598821-L1631/Art-Nouveau-English-Silver-Antique.  Mine also has the number code.

I did see one of these with a bit different design sell for almost $900 but it did have a chunk of the frame missing out of the silver.  So I think I could get a little more but $2500 not sure about it going for that.

Can you link to the one for $900 or was it not online ?

Would have to be a fairly significant maker to achieve that type of price at auction. One by Deakin sold for £1,100 but it was a large, very fine dressing table mirror.

The type you have is usually more low hundreds.

Also, like i said earlier, i'd expect that registration mark to throw up more Google results than it does. Vast majority refer to that one seller.

That's an incredible price when you consider it's condition. Not their usual style either, though has the exact same hallmarks as yours.

I hate private listings though. If someone sees that on Ebay, has a search online and sees the one for sale at $2,500, do they then think they have the chance to buy a possible bargain on Ebay ?

The one on Rubylane looks brand new.

I think they were honest about it having condition issues and I am sure having a chunk missing from it had to hurt the price some.  The one on Ruby Lane is in perfect condition.  I'll be interested to see what mine looks like shined up tonight.

Ok here it is after a little bit of shining.  Ok , 2 hours of cleaning with a q-tip and 2 glasses of wine. lol.  The gold tone is from my flash the frame is all silver.  Looks pretty.

What i,m wondering is ...how this goodwill let something that has a high value..slip through their fingers...don,t they have valuers to check things...Over here all the major charity shops have professionals to check their donations before they go for sale...

Wull,

I was wondering the same thing! If I'm not mistaken, the silver marks were on the front. Most people look on the back. They probably missed them.

It happens often here.  Tonight I got a pair of antique Victorian sterling and opal earrings for $7.99.  One lady on the news got a $25,000 painting at one.

Ice,

Not down here. They go over everything with a fine toothed comb. The best thing you can find is old furniture or electrical fixtures you can spray paint, covering up the builder's grade brass!

Wow, that's not good.  I have 2 that I frequent and always find something good.  We have a lot of young people working in them and they don't care.  One kid was showing me this what he said was a wood carving.  He couldn't believe the detail on it.  Had to tell him it wasn't wood, it was resin. lol

Lucky you! The best thing we ever found were 4 contemporary Carnival Glass goblets. I think I paid $24 for them. Of course, this doesn't stop us from looking. I have found some okay Depression Glass, but they ask retail prices.
