I got this dog ashtray today and I think it is green Onyx but not positive. Are these mostly from the 50's. He was so cute just had to bring him home. ;D
-
I remember those,, don`t think they were onyx though !!
-
It is stone but not exactly sure what kind. I found another one on the net and they list as onyx. ??
-
Maybe Alabaster.
-
What they think and what it actually is,, is two different things !!
-
So true sometimes.
-
I am trying to remember !! Everyone had one of those !! The dogs were popular back then !!
-
True, mart! The color is why I'm asking. I'm not claiming that's it!
-

That much I know !!
-
:D And then there are some that are onyx marble alabaster !! Must be a weird looking stone !! When they don`t know,,they look to see what everyone else had down and list them all !!
-
I'm thinking some people don't really care as long as it is stone not plastic because I listed it with a question on the stone with a pretty high bar price and within half hour I already got a watcher.

That is what I do when I am not 100% sure what it is !!~ I really think Greenacres has it !! Problem with these things are they used several types of stone !!
-
Exactly, many used whatever they had readily available. Alabaster was popular back then so it does make sense.
-
True,, and it sounds expensive !!
-
Alabaster was much cheaper to get and use (not as hard as marble and weighs less). It is a gypsum.
However, many times alabaster was mistaken for marble.
Can you scratch it with your nail? (on the underside)?
For fun, searcg "vintage alabaster dog ashtray" and you will see LOTS show up!!!!

These were also known as coin holders/trays for the men that didn't have a valet/stand.
