Title: 1892 mirror from Paris w/ newspaper
Post by: jweams on January 01, 2014, 07:17:30 AM
I bought this mirror at an antique market simply because I loved the faces and look of the mirror. Upon bringing it home and cleaning it up I took off the back and as "padding" is a news paper from Paris, France 1892!! I was very excited!! Just wondering if anyone has any idea o the value on something like this?? The mirror is not cracked as it appears in the picture...bad lighting I guess...but it is in perfect condition.

Really?  I was guessing brass because of weight and I have bought Similar mirrors and that's what they have been but copper is a possibility!   Especially the back!  The newspaper is what I think could also add value.  I paid 12 dollars so I'm sure I didn't take a loss just find it interesting and very exciting! ! ;D

looking at the hue of the back...it looks like copper, the inside though will tell you more as that has not been exposed to the elements, the filigree white metal frame...looks nice...but...unless it has a makers mark...then i,m afraid its value is limited...there are tons on ebay....with little or no bids

Back may be copper but frame is usually gilded brass !! French rococo mirrors usually are fairly inexpensive if smaller size !! How big is yours ??  Paper really adds nothing to value unless there is something of historical importance in it,, but its interesting !!

16x10 is approximate size.  I agree the back is copper but frame itself brass. The newspaper inside is very delicate obviously do I didn't turn through it much and it is all in french so not sure what all it says.  Goggled some of it and was about the pope and Islands in the middle east.

You might look carefully through the paper for anything that might add value but generally speaking,, day to day news doesn`t help !! Try getting a piece of cardboard to support the pages while turning them !! Slide it between before lifting up !!

I'd be amazed if you couldn't get 60-80 euros for it.

How much did you pay ?

I know!  You can't beat the price I paid!  It came from a vendor who usually doesn't sell this kind of stuff he is more into wine barrels tulip bulb crates from Holland pub advertisement and that kind of thing.  But I always stop by and talk to him because he is very nice I had bought something else that day from him and saw the glass be didnt even know he had much less what it was so I got a great deal!  :D

This mirror was just appraised in preperation for the move.  It appraised for 350 dollars. So this mirror and the scale were well worth the purchase!  :) especially the mirror paying only about 15 dollars! !

I know!  The appraisal makes me very sad that I will not be able to return to tongeren again!  The deals are amazing and an antiquers dream! ! A few of my best deals were a louis vi bombay chest of drawers paid 100 worth 500. And many florentine trays my regular vendors would give me or only charge five dollar appraised at 75 dollars each!! And florentine furniture came back high also paid very little! Wish I could keep shopping!
