Title: What is this ? Old note pad and pencil
Post by: levinll on January 16, 2014, 11:47:09 AM
picked up two of these at an estate sale last weekend. One has a pencil that helps keep the pad closed. The other is just a pad.

The one with the pencil appears to have gold leaf on the edges of the paper.

I have been looking at several of these notepad holders. The price varies according to the material it's made of. The s7lverplate was asking $95. The brass was varied from $9.99 to $32. I didn't find one that had your design or metal, but I'll keep checking.

Late 30`s or early 40`s most likely !! Has a Deco look !! Would have kept these on a telephone table !! Were used well into the 60`s !! I had one very similar !! Are both spring loaded and does it still work ??

Hmmm, that may depend upon on the size. I agree with Mart if this is fairly large, say 4" or more in length. But if it is tiny, about 2" then I think it is a dance card holder.

Depends on how big this one is,, they didn`t say !! Largest piece in the chatelaine is 2 5/8 in. !! Could be either one !!
Looked again,, you may be right !! Didn`t notice the loop before !!

Both measures 2 3/4" x 1 3/4", and their spring hinge works.

The one with the pencil and gold leaf edged paper makes me think it's too fancy to be a notepad holder, but I'm no expert in these.

That's what I originally thought these were, but mine aren't made out of silver.

Could well be a silverplate ,, is it marked differently ?? As to the other one,,it has a paper pad and a place for a pencil doesn`t it ?? Then its a notepad !!  They used to do that gold colored edging on stuff like that and books !!

I don't see any markings on either of them.

Doesn't have to be a ' lady's ' chatelaine, if you're thinking someone from the aristocracy who would only have owned silver.

I mean difference between a Lady and a waitress/ servant in high class hotel, or " just " another woman.
