Hi...I'm new here and hoping someone can help me find the worth of an old plate that I picked up at a garage sale.
It is from the estate of Elihu Root...stating that he was sec of state 1885-1909.
Sorry if the pics don't post right away, I'm learning here....but will work on it until they show up :)
Do you think this is worth anything? Where would I go to find out? I have looked for antique dealers in my
area and there aren't any that can give me a price.
Thank you so much and I am looking forward to reading all the posts and start my hunting!!! ;D

Can you take a good clear pic of the mark on the bottom ?? Your pic here is at an angle,,stand where you can look straight at it and snap a pic !! That way we can read it !!
-
AND please take the picture in natural light...without the flash on the camera! That way it should show up without a glare! :)
Welcome!
-
I hope these help...thank you!
-
It look's like a Souvenir plate to me.
-
The sticker still is not clear enough to read !! Can you type out what it says ??

From the estate of Elihu Root sec of state 1889-1905

I guess there is nothing impressed into the bowl itself ?? No other marks ?? The artwork is very primitive but it does have the R in the center !! That nor the sticker is proof that it was his !! However I don`t think it would really matter on value either way !! My personal opinion is that about $50. is what it would bring if you sell it. Just because he held office does not make it worth more !! But it does make it more interesting !!

Maybe this could be a possibility. The Elihu Root Society has a contact number and they might be able to direct you!

OR
If it is believed that it is that old and possibly from his estate, you might want to contact a local museum for guidance/help on this one.

Me thinks it's quite old because the bottom edge is not glazed. ???
-
Yes, Cogar, it has that look about it, also the decoration and glaze, though you could achieve a similar look today if you wanted.
Unusual rim / border though in the well.
What's his family history because that could easily be an R in the middle.
-
I know I'am getting Old, But I see Holes in the rim. Indicates it was designed to hang on a wall.
-
Yes, the age of the bowl/plate is not in question !! It certainly looks appropriate to that time period !! But the person wants to know about its worth !!~ The link KC gave might help with that !! I am just not sure that he is a highly collected person !! If so I have never heard of it !! Nor any other Sec. of State !!
-
Value hinges somewhat on the provenance - at the moment we have a sticker.
Style of the plate is fairly common although that inner band on the well is unusual. If it's American then i'm not going to recognise it.
Does the style not look familiar to any of you across the pond ?
-
No, it doesn`t to me !! I wondered because of the primitive quality of the artwork and design, if Mr. Root made pottery as a hobby !! Not sure if that was common back then !~!

OOPS, for me, :'( .... you are right, Dewain, ...... I should have enlarged that picture.

Thank you all for your help! I still haven't been able to find anything about the plate. Oh well....I do love your boards though!
-
Hopefully you can find someone that deals with historical items or contact a museum !! Perhaps they might be of more help in valuation !!
