He was Austrian from what I read. There are many pieces out there that seem to be "after" him. In other words they are copies of the original that bear his name, made for a secondary market. Pieces seem to be selling in the 100-200 dollar range. Depose is the French word for copyright or trademark

I'm probably wrong, but I've always thought that the mark of "Geschutzt" translated roughly to "Protected" by patent or copyright.

Rauville is correct!  It is German and means protected!

Used in Germany and Austria.

Please identify any initials on the piece!

Hi, Dont take initial or sign on the piece. The unique I see is geschutzt 2 times, 1229 2 times, and depose.
Regards
Micaela

There is a bronze figurine by the celebrated Austrian sculptor Franz Bergman ( sometimes see his name backwards - Namgreb - on items ) which is numbered 1229. However, it's a magpie on it's own.

Look on the tree carefully - do you see any other impressed marks ? Maybe an urn / vase shape ?

Could be the magpie is numbered 1229 and this is a trial piece. Could be a good Chinese fake.

You should have it appraised first hand at a good auction house

Pretty clear why the one at Bonham's warranted such a grand price.  Such a beautiful lifelike piece!

Unfortunately, Micaela, yours isn't finished like that one.

If you search, you will see MANY brass/bronze items with the same markings as yours.

If my eyes aren't deceiving me when I enlarge your markings picture, I am seeing "jul" in left hand section under the GES?!

Also, is that a plug or nail head in the top left hand section?
