Title: Can anyone tell me about this buffet
Post by: LGgrivas on March 17, 2014, 09:36:33 PM
This was handed down to me from my grandmother and she got it from her mother. I think it is from the 1850s. It is tiger oak with carved scaled hands that hold up the mirror and lion paw feet. It has an oval beveled mirror with carved rosess on it. I tried to post a picture but it was too big I will have to figure that out. Thank you in advance to anyone who can tell me something about this.

if you right click the picture and open it in paint, you can resize.  On the top left click on resize and start with 25%.  Then save and try to upload.  Depending on the picture size, you may need to resize it a couple times.  (at least this is what I do)  Hope it helps

Can you please take a drawer out and take a picture of the side of the drawer and post it.

Any markings on it anywhere?  Inside the drawer or body of the piece?  On the back?

Can you please please please take closer picture of the supports for the mirror?  Drool!!!!

Very inreresting information. Thank you so much. This piece has been in the family for years. I reciently got bitten by the antique bug. I am fortunate that I have many old dishes, picture and jewelry handed down to me. My kids are now raised and I have time to pursue some of the things I have been interested in for years.
I am not interested in selling but do you know a ball park how much this buffet is worth?

value is going to depend on where you are but generally speaking, i would guess $200- $500
the carved hands dont hurt it, it kinda gives it a unique quality which sometimes adds value

Well, when I first saw this I was hoping it was from the earlier period,, but it isn`t !!  Jacon4 hit it correctly !!  Very nice though !! I am in Texas and price here would be on the higher side of that figure just because it is a bit unique !!

In my area (Dallas Fort Worth) with those hands and the beautiful golden oak...I could see this go for $800 to $1200.

Have always seen the Green Man's face in furniture...but never his hands like this!  I REALLY LIKE THIS!!!!!  Are there any other human or "mascaron" features on the piece?

Gotta admit, as a kid this would have scared me too. Would have wondered if the rest of the body was in the chest!  :)

Totally agree Mart...that's why I noted Dallas/Ft. Worth city area!   But think this would most likely go higher even at Canton!

I have a rocking chair with a face on it LOL. I have to fix the rocker though as one of my sons friends sat in it and broke it.

Here's a piece that a dealer friend of mine is offering for sale. In my opinion, not as unique as the one being discussed. 8)

My estimate is based on auction prices and in todays world, one can get "brown furniture" at rock bottom prices, cheaper than Ikea even which is basically sawdust thats glued together. Never been a better time to buy nor a worse time to sell when it comes to old furniture.

And the Empire revival style is not one that most people want !! Those heads, faces, hands and feet just do not blend well in todays homes !! There are a few diehards though !!  Its a gorgeous piece of furniture and looks well made for the right home !!

I just love the old furniture. I love the way it is made to last, the creativity of it. I am so tired of paying high prices for furniture and having it fall apart. 27 years ago I bought an antique reproduction couch, Dino Mark Anthony, I got it on clearance for 1200.00 dollars. My dad thought I was crazy at the time but that couch has held up like iron, through 3 kids and lots of pets. It still looks great. I have gone through many other couches and payed more money for some of them just to have them fall apart after a few years. I will be surprised if any of the things made today ever make it to antique statis.

Most Golden Oak was created for the masses and was very inexpensive compared to Walnut or Cherry. That is why there is still so much of it hiding in attics and basements. You could by a drop front desk in 1910 for around 2.00. Or even get it for free from the Larkin Company.
In my neck of the woods a piece like that buffet would sell for 500.00 or more depending on the day. The condition is amazing. It was probably around 10.00-12.00 when new.

I agree it is worth more, for sure. You would just have to get it to a big city. Around here that would easily be a thousand dollar piece.

Another thing when it comes to value these days, size. Generally speaking in todays market, smaller is better for many reasons.

Totally agree with other remarks on value if this piece sold in smaller towns, etc.

But in Dallas/Ft. Worth area...the more unusual and pristine...the better.  To have something that you can't find everywhere...the best!  Artsy and yuppie would buy it in a heartbeat!
