Title: Silver badge with Egyptian Sphinx - Militairy? Egyptian?
Post by: benbenny on March 22, 2014, 02:28:00 PM
Have a badge that's unknown to me.
It is a silver and looks like its gold plated and handmade, the badge it self measures approx 1.7inches (4.5cm) wide.
Two sphinx facing left and right, black round stone in the center, wings at the bottom and under need them two Serpens in the middle  .
The stone it self is not made out of plastic, I tested this with the needle test.
The back is covered in black leather
Is it military? Air Force? Or is it given to somebody in a special event?
Thank you.

I pulled out some books. This probably was made around 1926, the Egyptian Revival period. The one I am looking at does have an Egyptian hmk. There is a name here I would have to check or you could check. Scott Grodsky collection.

Are you from Australia, Benbenny ?

Looks like a normal badge added to a military medal ribbon

I don't know the ID on yours , benberry , and did some searching too !

Perhaps it may be an award for sports-related activities ?
It was very common in Egypt to issue military-type/looking medals/awards for various civilian activities , but I've found none like yours so far .

Once you find (if that happens) the value/who/what/etc about your little piece , perhaps you might 'up' its' value by re-purposing it as an Egyptian/deco-revival-esque piece of jewelry ?
