Hello
I have recently been doing some ground work in the back garden and have been unearthing lots of broken pottery. Most of it looks like broken plates. But a couple of items were more unusual and I couldnt identify what they would have been used for. One I have attached pictures of in the hope that someone can tell me what it is and maybe a date for it.
As can be see from the pics it is a piece from something larger.
There is no marks on it.
The picture on it looks like a print rather than painted on.
The house whos garden it was found in is a stone terraced house in Wales and could be near 200 yrs old so at what time it was discarded there I cant estimate.

It looks to me like a lamp base ..... such as this one.

Looks like the base of an old lamp,,mid 30`s or 40`s !! Its transfer ware,,like a decal !!

Yes it certainly looks like that. It never ccured to me to be a lamp base as it is very small

Yes its suprising how much pottery there is in the garden. It seems everyone who lived there must have been throwing the stuff in the garden each time they broke something.
Something I found today, what looks like a fairly modern plate with a logo that I have been googling but with no luck. only thing thats close is Indian Oil company, but that doent sound right

What is that in inches ?? There were two basic sizes for lamps !! A large one for a parlor and a smaller size for bedroom !! Look at the bottom back and see if there is a hole for the wiring !!

That would be 3.54" high, 3.15" wide, and 1.96" deep ;D ;D
Mart, I usta be able to quickly convert metric to decimal or vice versa ..... but nowdays I use Google.
So, just load Google and key in ....... convert ?? to ?? .... and it'll do it for you.
The above "??" can be any abbreviated dimension such as:
in, ft, yd, mi, .... mm, cm, km, ..... F, C (temperature), .... pt, qt gal, liter, ... etc.
And ps, I'm constantly using the ........ define ?-?-?-?-? ....... to doublecheck my word usage.

Sorry didnt check that this was a US based forum. Yes cogars conversions are correct.
There is no hole for the wire as can be seen on the photos. The wire hole may have been on the missing bottom section

Hi, couldn't this just have been a small vase (because of its size)? I mean the lamp base cogar shows is also made in form of a vase...

I was thinking it looked like a mantle piece! Would have been attached to a marble base with a rod through it.
Mat, the reason it most likely isn't just a vase is because of the small hole at the top and bottom! Vase wouldn't have a hole at the bottom (solid) and a larger hole at the top!

The hole at the bottom is just there because the bottom ortion is broken off.
The measurements are correct. It is very small, it fits comfortably in the palm of my hand. To get a visual idea, the photo 3 is about the size of an hens egg

Now that is an interesting size for a lamp. I have one beside me but a lot bigger. Never seen one that small.

If it were all intact it would look more proportionate !! I have had some that were very small that I assume were nightlights !!
