Title: Need help identfing fur coat
Post by: rustyattic on April 26, 2014, 04:21:06 PM
Picked up this fur coat.  It was inside an Evan's Fur Chicago box, with a shipping label from 1957.  How can I tell what kind of fur it is?  It's 36in long.

It has the "shiny and wet" look of Mink. I would say "dyed ranch mink" to be more exact.

Either that or chinchilla,, there was a big surge in chinchilla ranching about that time !! My neighbor had a garage full of them !!

Chinchilla was REALLY popular.  However, even more popular and less expensive was Muskrat!  That could be muskrat!  ( Many times it was touted as seal fur because people didn't like that it could have come from the muskrat!)

Your best bet is to take it to a furrier and ask.

They made so many kinds of coats that it is too hard to tell from a picture.  The up close pic sure looks alot different than the overall coat picture.  Looks like small pieces, pieced together which would mean it could have been many/any animal/s.
