Title: Islamic Case

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum.  I recently acquired a really cool piece, except I have no idea what it is. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Is that a scroll inside ?

The script is similar to Devanagari, used in India and Nepal. Maybe a prayer box / holder of some kind. Maybe a Buddhist prayer wheel
There might be a small hole where a handle could be fitted.
