That criss cross design in the bottom is weird !! Is it etched into it ?? Can you feel it with your hand ??

From the images , looks folksy-artsy to my eyes , what with the (nicely) stylized animals & all .

Bottom sure looks like a canvas pattern (overglazed) where the pot was set to dry ...

no fancy, this is one entire piece that has been made to look like different pieces put together, bottom smooth you'd never guess

its smooth on the outside and chalky inside

I can't tell what its really made of

That's a possibility Fancypants !! Does look like canvas !!  I have no clue on this one !! If you tap it with a spoon or something does it sound dull or more bell like ??

I have several Russian pieces in soapstone but they aren't as big in size as yours.  Never would have guessed.  Nice!

Soapstone is an interesting thing.  I have seen so many variations in color and feel.  Not sure why?   Some scratch very easy and others are very hard.  Maybe different parts of the stone?

hello Ice

I read up on it of course, its also used for powder (face), and talcum--yet this is really heavy and hard with the inside so silky soft

I think I will know this again if I see it

I have green, gold and brown soapstones.  They are heavy for size (actually are heavier than granite of same size). They feel smoothy/silky.

I just haven't seen any painted like this before.  Love learning something new!
