Title: goodwill find
Post by: sugarcube5419 on June 03, 2014, 09:50:19 AM
if a person had to describe this vase, would the claw feet (if that's the right word) be important?

Yepper, a claw foot.  Is this pottery or metal?

What is fascinating is the origins of the claw foot and claw/ball design.  Origins were from Chinese/Japanese (?) and it is even argued that the origins are 1) the claw of a dragon holding the pearl of wisdom and/or 2) the claw of a crane holding onto a river stone.  The crane stand stands watching over her nest attentively while resting on one leg.  The raised/tucked leg holds the stone and should the crane fall asleep...the claw would relax/fall and the crane would quickly awaken to keep watch over the young.

Irregardless of origin, the use of feet on items has fascinated collectors for centuries.

Fascinating lore KC. Asian items are way out of my scope.

Is anything written on the bottom ?? Is it a single piece or a vase and stand ??

thanks mart-

its one piece, very heavy but not cast iron. It was marked 24.95 on tuesday so I got it for 2.00.

nothing on its bottom, in fact it has a velvety inside so not for a real dirt plant.

I just don't quite understand what makes it so expensive.  Is it called something special?

I would just surmise that this is for decorative purposes only.  Pick a price!  If it doesn't sell....reduce....o r what so many do...raise the price!
