Hi and welcome!
Can you please give a little more detail. Such as size, weight, material it is made from. Any history of how you came into acquiring it and any knowledge beforehand. :)
Also, A better picture of the top and hooks?
Does it open? Are there any markings on it anywhere?
-
not sure why it's not posting maybe photos? OK on my third time now :) it's 9 1/2 tall by 8" wide no markings, its feels like a metal or brass of somekind no sure about the weight. It has a hole cut out of the bottom and the metal sticks are held inside with somekind of pipe holder. I got at a yard sale years ago and everyone keeps asking me what is that...and I tell them I don't know!!! So maybe I can find out.
I'm going to upload one photo at a time so it will post...if anyone can attach them to the post I'd appreciate it. thanks for your time, Lisa :-\

Welcome to the forum , BamaLisa !
You might take a peek @ the 'main; antiques questions 'page' & check out the section @ the top of the page , concerning info on loading pictures , for starters .
If that doesn't work/help , let the forum members know again , o.k. ?
My first glance @ your cool little item makes me think that it may have been used in conjunction with a lantern , as with the old 'smudge-pots' that were in use for warning drivers on roads of hazards/road work/workers ahead .
You could check with a magnet to see if it's made from steel , or not .
-
Definitely have my curiosity up about pipes inside!
Oh my goodness fancypants. Haven't heard the term smudge pot in years!!! We used to have to put them out in the orange groves when freezing weather came on. Remember them using them on the highways growing up (before the battery and solar lights came along on construction areas).
Never seen a smudge pot have a topping like this!
Did it ever look like it had soot inside of it?
Are there any threads on the opening on the bottom?
I was thinking a hanging lantern.

hope this works

""You could check with a magnet to see if it's made from steel , or not .""
Yes a magnet sticks right on it!!!
-
Does the bottom look like it either sat on something else or that a solid bottom was attached at some time ?? Do the metal rods come all the way out ?? Are there hooks at both ends or just the top ?? My first impression is a coal heater of some type but would need a bottom of some sort !!
-
Are there any traces of carbon or soot on the inside? Try wiping it with a white cloth.
-
It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's a , I have no clue what it is, lol.
-
Ha !! Nor do I !!
-
Maybe a primitive Moroccan lantern ?
-
Could be but no bottom !! Maybe to sit over a candle ??
-
it does look like it should sit on something, kinda looks like someone cut a whole in it the bottom maybe to clean it? the whole is not what I would call round...its mis-shape... Its rusty on the inside I don't see any soot. hooks on the top side bottom of sticks are straight.....the pipe holders on the inside move back and forth by turning little knob on the outside....yal think this is different, I have a few other things I got from the same yard sale, and I'm thinking its kind of freaky! Once I find out what this is I'd love for you all to look at the other two items I have. thanks for your time!! Just hoping I didn't jinx myself ???

Did you ask the people at the sale what it is ?? We would love to look at the other things !!~ We are not often stumped,, but,,,maybe Rauviile will know what it is !! If he doesn`t know,,he is a pretty good detective !!
-
as soon as I get the other from my son I'll post some photos of them...I didn't ask the sellers anything I just thought the things were unique and bought them all pretty cheap the other two items are somekind of medal mask...like Jason? Its scare of the things that interest me lol. ;)
thanks all for warm welcome!
-
Glad you like it here !! If you remember to always ask the owners what an item is,, chances are they will know !! Not often will they have such an odd piece and not know its use !! Might even take the thing back and ask them if its convenient !!

Good advice Mart! To me it looks like something was burned in it. It looks much like the pots they would use on the road as markers but with holes. There could have been a burner that fit into the hole in the bottom. Just a wild guess.
