Title: Louis XV or NOT? That is the question. :)
Post by: TNJChris on July 27, 2014, 09:22:40 AM
I have 2 pieces that I received conflicting reports on. I have been searching everywhere to try to identify a chair and a table that I just came across. From my best guess, I would say the chair is a Louis XV Vanity Chair, and the table a Louis XV music cabinet. One resource said they were not period pieces and that the chair may even be an antique Italian replica. Another resource agreed with my own assessment of the pieces.

I have my doubts about what I came up with on the chair because in all of my research I haven't come across any Louis XV pieces with the lattice style carving in the design similar to what the upper right section of the chair has in it.

The problem I have with the music table is it seems much smaller in size than the examples I have found on the web, as well as it is not enclosed except for the drawer.

Any advice or value would be appreciated! Thanks  :)

Can you take the drawer out  of the stand and take a pic of the dovetails on the sides and one of the underside of the chair please ?? When you say conflicting opinions, were these done by a hands on visual or did you just email pics to someone online ??

i would, in addition to Marts request, like to see the underside of the stand. From here the chair looks like what was marketed as French Provincial furniture in the 70s. The finish looks purposefully distressed.

Kind of my feeling too Frogpatch !!,, Many people don`t realize that the French Rococo, Louis styles were made back then !! We were swamped with French Provencial furniture !! Just looking at the piece tells little,, we need to see how its made as well as how the wood is aged !!

Here's my 2cents worth.  The top chair appears to be "in the design of" French Rococo style with a carved acanthus shaped cartouche.  I personally cannot tell if it is original or a reproduction from a picture on this one.  It is an ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL chair irregardless.  If you were in my neck of the woods it would sell easily!

The STAND appears to be from very latest 1800's to early 1900's.  Very simple in design.  Not a cabinet (not enclosed with a door).  Looks more English or American made than French.  Would like to see pictures of the underside and side of drawer.  This could have been used for music but it could have also been used for magazines, etc.  The time period you are referring to, the French have finely made music CABINETS, enclosed

I agree on the music stand KC !!  Does not show French styling and I am guessing its English !! That is about the time period I think as well but can`t tell any more without additional pics !!

*NOTE TO ADMIN

I'm having issues with uploading/posting. Last reply I tried I got a 502 error page. I have no issues on any other sites I use. I'm running Firefox 30.0 on a Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.4. UGH!

*Update - It only happens when I'm uploading images. These images are much smaller than the requirements allow.

The size you used last was perfect !!  That allows us to enlarge with no problems,,at least for me !! We can see detail perfectly with this pic !!  Now to the stand,, I was surprised because the dovetailing is closer to what we see on American furniture than the English pieces !! Where are you located in the world ??  NE states by chance ??  Its pretty typical of that area !!

I'm in NY. Does that help determine it's origin and function? Long Island to be more specific.

The reports, were through email from a couple of dealers that are known for that period.

That's kind of what I thought !!  Did you send them detailed pics or just the same ones you posted here ??  No matter what they are known for,,you can`t look at the top of anything and give a reasonably accurate answer as to the origin of furniture !! Might I ask how you came to own these pieces ??

The chair was from a garage sale. The table was at the curb. :) More photos coming next.

Maybe you should drive the streets more often if things like this are trashed !! The music stand is a nice find if in good condition !!  My opinion is that the chair was made somewhere between 1960 and 1970`s !! Legs are way too heavy for the period style !!  It is just a reproduction of the Louis XV style and not necessarily like any that was made during that period. They have made this style several times over the years !!  Value on it would be somewhere in the $50. range or more in a larger metro area !!  The chippy paint might actually help sell it if that is your intent !! Some still like the Shabby Chic look !!  It was reupholstered that is what the tag says and gives the name of the owner at that time,,Ginsberg !! Hope I got the spelling correct !! Could be an Italian import but that's a  toss up !!
The music stand if in good to excellent condition would be around $150. depending on how the finish is !! From what I can see it is in fair condition so maybe a bit less that that !!  It was likely made in the general area where it was found,,the north east states !! Probably around the turn of the century although my feeling is that it was made 1910 to 1920 !!  No real way to know for sure !!

Wow, i would have squealed the tires braking to get that table if I saw it on the side of the road.  I do believe it is an American made piece, early 1900's.

Yes, the initial reaction was, "GOOD LORD, LOOK AT THAT TABLE," followed by a screech on the pavement. :) It was truly a rare find at the curb.

I really appreciate the knowledge. I collect and sell so many interesting mystery items but I have the urge to know what they are. So far I haven't been able to look to one source for help so I'm hoping you all are enjoying it as much as I so I never become a pain with all the stuff I need help with :)

The chippy chair was $10 at a garage sale, not too shabby. Pun intended.

LOL.

That chair would sell great here as an accent chair. In my area, DFW, it would sell for $80 to $125 easily.

We are glad to have you as a member !! We never tire of looking at other peoples finds !!  I would say you did well in rescuing that table !! Irregardless of what it sells for,,its found money !!  Chair was not a bad buy either !!  Hope you didn`t have to pay for those online appraisals !!  Most are a ripoff,,a few are honest but many only see the money and care little if they are right or wrong !!

Thanks guys!

No, they were not paid appraisals. I usually send a bunch of emails to different places and see who replies. I hope using the term "report" didn't make the situation confusing.
