Title: Crumb pan, "Made in Japan" and a hallmark "Y"
Post by: h_rach on August 06, 2014, 01:28:28 AM
Looking for any information on a crumb pan that was given to me when my grandmother passed. I think its silver, it has floral and swirly (sorry don't know the technical name) embossing and on the back is stamped with "Made in Japan" and a hallmark "Y" which looks to be inside a 5 petal flower.

Would love to know the age, value, maker and well really any info on this odd little item.

Without a picture I can only surmise that you are talking about a crumb catcher, silent butler, ash butler, etc.  There were several variations in basic styles with some resembling a dust pan with broom, a dust pan with a crumb knife and others fashioned as a hinged receptacle on a handle.

We really need to see a picture of yours and the maker's mark to fully help you.

These were commonly used up until the beginning of the 1900's and have since become collector items.  The more ornate and unique the more collectible.
