Title: does this look bone or resin?
Post by: daxu on August 08, 2014, 12:18:00 AM
bought this JUNK BOAT on ebay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CARVED-CHINESE-ORIENTAL-JUNK-BOAT-ON-PLINTH-Loft-find-/221508094995?nma=true&si=hwbFa3%252BP09MFsbAjpi15fczTimc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I haven't received the item yet, but base on picture, does it look like bone or resin? The seller says he doesn't know, and I have 0 knowledge anyway. For me, it is a nice decoration item, but would be nice to know bit more.

Very nice no matter what it is !!  Easy to determine resin when you get it !! Just take a pin or needle and hold it with pliers,, heat it red hot, then stick the point into an area that cannot be seen !! Straight resin will melt and the pin will penetrate !! But there are many that are made from finely powdered bone mixed with resin !! You need to look with a strong magnifying glass for those !! There will be no grain where bone has grown,, it will be an all over consistant appearance !!
