Title: Silver Bowls history and Value
Post by: Bargainhunter on August 12, 2014, 01:29:33 PM
First post here...Thanks for any help that you might be able to provide.

What I have is 3 silver bowls that are unmarked they seem to pass every test (I have not done the acid test) to say they are silver.

They don't have any normal silver indicating marks, the research that I have done I seem to think they are Thai or something similar.

I would like to figure their history and possibly value. I will try and add sizing.

How big are the bowls ??  The middle pic looks thin walled,, like it was pressed rather than hand done !! One has a coppery color inside so its possible that they are silver plate over copper base !!  The color looks wrong for sterling !! Could be the pics so not sure !! Will look closer later !!

Can you please list the dimensions of the bowls?

Without knowing this...they first hand look like salt cellars.

The largest one is 4 1/2" wide and 3" tall. The smaller ones are 3 1/2" wide and 2" tall.

You are probably correct as to area Thai Ceylon Burma or whatever they are called now. Pressed as another poster said most likely low grade silver 800 or less but possibly plated have you gone deep enough with your acid test ie. below the surface ? They do look relatively recent if so just weigh them and look to scrap value probably only a few pounds... One could hope they are some significant religious artifacts we can all be mistaken.

I bought them at an estate auction with some other plated silver stuff, I believe they are solid not plated. I didn't pay much of anything for them. I liked the looks of them and will probably just hang on to them.

How does one find someone to evaluate them in person? Who would you recommend I try looking up?

Wow, glad I asked the size.  They first looked as if they could be individual salt bowls... but the sizes are rather big.

They do look pressed from the pictures and are rather interesting!

These are ones that I personally would need a "hands on"...so don't feel I can be of much help here. Sorry.

There is a jewelry store here that I occasionally will ask !!  Try for an older independent jeweler !! Not one of the chains !! And always get local opinions as to their honesty !!
