Title: Makers Mark on Bread Crumber
Post by: Vwdoyle on August 15, 2014, 10:22:43 PM
First off I'm not even sure if that is what you would call this.  It is the first thing that came to mind.  Is anyone familiar with this makers mark?  The only one I was able to find similar was for S.B. & Son, who seemed to only deal in pottery and porcelain.  Any help would be great.

Thank you!

Hi.  This is actually called a "Crumb Knife" and sometimes referred to as a "Crumber".  It was used instead of a Crumb Brush, to properly remove crumbs from the table during the course of a meal at restaurants, or in homes by staff.

I am sorry but I cannot make out the Silver Hallmarks on this with the current picture.  May I suggest that you take a picture again with "natural light" and no flash on then post on here.

Depending on who made these and the patterns, they can get pricey.

Looks like this was made by Homan Manufacturing Company out of Cincinnati Ohio. which originated/established in 1847, and went out of business in 1941.

This isn't marked as being silver but "special metal".  Homan did make silver plate but specialized in Pewter over the years.  However, there are pieces marked with "Quadruple Plate" above their touch mark/logo.  It could be that yours wasn't struck well.  It seems there could be more above it!

That's it KC!!!  I have been trying to post bigger pics for you guys but it keeps timing out on me.  Is this because the photo is too large?  I have had this same issue in the past.

Thank you for the info! You nailed it!!!

I do believe that is the issue with the picture!

I am nuts over silver items...especially the extremely odd/unique/strange pieces from Victorian Times!
