Own this mask made off stone and looks handcut . Lenght 17 cm . Any idea off age and country made ?
-
Have you checked this mask with a hot pin to see if its stone ?? Why does the interior not match the back ?? If its stone should be the same !! Where its chipped looks like a mixture of something !! Yet the back is totally different !! Almost has a sandwiched look !!

To my eyes , that there mask sure looks like an item made from clay , considering that the marks i/s the mask are from clayworking (casting) tools .... while pressing/filling a clay mold ; which is just my 2 cents worth on this one , gerspee .
I sure could be wrong , but I think it's a fairly modern semi-mass 'shop produced' fired clay item , as in for the tourist/decoration trade .
... As in the image below , I can't always tell well from images , though ...

I would agree Fancypants !!

Had a very close look with a microscope and is not a clay and it is made off stone . But colored with some ? whatever paint . And no moulding lines to make sure its not cast from whatever material . So stone and handcut I think .

If those are chisel "cuts" on the backside then it has to be a "soft" stone ..... probably of volcanic origin.
-
Cannot figure the lines on the back running lengthwise but not the interior which looks like a granite !!
-
Is there any chance you could post another image that would be a complete image of the back of your cool little item , gerspee ?
I'm still trying to wrap (rap) my head around this one !

Here's the backside complete . Maybe youre able to see more now ?
