Title: Buffet - New or Old?
Post by: Vwdoyle on August 31, 2014, 02:58:15 PM
Hello Everyone,

My friend picked this up for really cheap and we are both curious of its age and what style category it would fall into.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Do both top area lift up? or have a drawer?

Looks to be mid century Gothic which was about the same time as the Mediterranean style and Spanish Revival !! Sometime in the 60`s !!

KC, the tops do not lift up or contain a drawer.  There are two doors, one on either side and two drawers in the middle.

Thanks Mart!  That helps out a lot.

I wouldn't call this gothic per say Mart, although that is what is commonly known today.

The reason why I was asking about the features on the top...I have only seen this style commonly used on old radio cabinets, old Victrola cabinets and my neighbor has a heirloom piece passed down through the family from the late 1800's that has this on it (a standing silver chest)!  The first I have seen this was on the old Victrola cabinets.  Was considered to be very "stately" (dignified/impressive).

Need to look further on this one...

Mart, I am referring to the first picture, features on the top left and right sides of the top of the buffet.  They are in the same style as the tops of old Victrola's.  Like my neighbor's silver chest...no function but ornamental.  Their's is much the same style but isn't gothic in appearance in "real life" but could be perceived as that in a dark picture.  Also, this isn't a typical buffet from the same time period because most were straight tops since they were used for food service.  This one is more "decorative" than functional.

That Barley Twist stretcher base might be the “key” to dating it.

That Barley Twist stretcher base might be the “key” to dating it.

Those barley twist features, along with the oak drawer bottoms would point towards an English piece from the mid 1920's in my opinion.

Ding Ding!!!!

Should have asked to see the decorative pieces at the top as well!  The display of food/knickknacks, etc on top are nice but hide the overall expression of the piece!
