Title: Can someone help me identify this pictorial on this panel?
Post by: icedgold10 on September 14, 2014, 07:29:39 PM
It is a religious piece as you can tell.  It's a small fabric panel 9 1/2" x 6 1/2".  The back is plain.  Looking for country, meaning ect.  Thank you.

Just guessing, but to me looks like the King of Poland, Przemysl II about 1295 AD. ???

Hi, my guess is that it is emperor Heinrich VI, look here: http://de.wikisource.org/wiki/Kaiser_Friedrich_II._Der_Wegbereiter_der_Renaissance/I._Der_staufische_Reichsgedanke . Seems that someone was inspired by the famous Manesse codex. The "Reichsapfel", the globe with the cross on it, was also a symbol of power of the Holy Roman Emperors...

Mat , that is identical to the pictorial on my fabric.  Do you know if these were used as decorations or on robes traditionally?  I haven't got a grip on the age of the fabric.  If you smell it close up it has a bit of a mineral type smell.  Not really sure how to describe it.  I'm thinking you hit the nail on the head though.  Thank you.

I understand your pictorial as a kind of "copy" of the depiction in the Codex Manesse. The codex itself (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codex_Manesse) was not known to a broader public before C20, I think, and so it is unlikely that your fabric is older than that. I do not think it was used on a robe, but rather that it is some kind of souvenir, maybe from Heidelberg, where the codex is kept in the library.

Unlike the other pictures....yours has him holding an orb.  Is it the Imperial Orb of the Roman Empire?

You can even buy mugs!  :)

Hi sugarcube5419, I do not think my IQ is so special (and I never dared to check it) , I just remember things I have seen once quite well, and it happend that I have a book with all the miniature paintings of the Codex Manesse!  ;) Mat
