Title: High arm rest Arm Chair Identification
Post by: allenj on September 17, 2014, 08:12:37 AM
I found this chair and as I started taking it apart and realized its older than I thought and need help finding it origin. I have never seen a chair like this before and can not find in a google search. The stuffing is some kind of animal hair and hay. It appears it originally had leather and was tufted.

There were many makers in the early 20th century that made this style of furniture. Some refer to it as Empire revival. There were usually other pieces that matched like a rocker or love seat. They were stuffed with horsehair and straw and often had leather or oil cloth upholstery. The variations in these pieces are endless. I have had dozens over the years and no two were alike. The earlier pieces were more elaborate and embellished as a rule. Usually made of mahogany, cherry of other wood like birch stained to look like those.

That's correct !! Horsehair and excelsior usually with a layer of cotton batting over that !!  Your chair is from the late 20`s or 30`s !!
