Title: Maple and Co table - any info about it appreciated...
Post by: MaxDread on October 14, 2014, 03:08:31 PM
Hi all

I'm doing a bit of an Antique Roadshow post here....

I have had this table for many years and never given much though tot he make of it.  I had to put it in the shed temporarily the other day, and whilst doing so i saw it had a makers badge on the underside which said it was made by Maple and Co.

A quick check on line revealed that they are a reputable make.  But I can find nothing remotely similar to this table.

Any info most appreciated.

Cheers

Max

PS - I have more pics and would be happy to post them if they would be helpful.

Is the design on top done with an inlay or just a paint/stain technique ??

Mart, is this what would be termed a Rattan side table?  Reminds me of the 1930's to 1940's in style.

TomYamPraKraPong, can you please post a picture of the makers mark?

Sure looks like it KC !!  Yes, seeing the tag might help date it !!  Maple and Co. was a very large company,, many of the rattan pieces may have been imported and retailed by the company but haven`t found info on that yet !!  Can`t think of any company that actually made that type of furniture !!

Hi

I don't think TomYamPraKraPong will be able to upload a picture because the table is mine!  Pics below.  I would say the top is painted.  I have posted a close photo of the top...

Huge thanks for the help and input.  Much appreciated.

Argentine (Buenos Aires) is still a big producer of rattan furniture. I would surmise that it was made there and imported to England. The design looks like the 20s or 30s to me as stated earlier.

Pretty sure you are right Frogpatch !!  Seems like the furniture they made was the very high end case pieces by top artisans of the time !! Other types were imports just as the retailers today do !!  Although there was rattan furniture made in the UK which I did not know, the design on this table is not English !! In fact I am still trying to figure it out !!  It is just a random mish mash of shapes and seems to follow no design at all !!  I looked at other pieces that the company had and it was quite well done !! Its possible this was one import that did not sell well !!  Could be why another similar one can not be found !!

Whoops, my apologies MaxDread for the wrong notation!

I do believe that this could have been painted "after market".

Thanks for all the useful, interesting and helpful responses.

I'm presuming the table is not really worth anything then?  Is that right?

But either way, it's great to know a bit more about it.

Cheers

It definitely has decorative value as a vintage piece. Where I live I could see it bringing 100 dollars or so on a good day. It is unusual. It almost looks like a wood burning design to me.

Like Frogpatch said, it has value,, just not as much as others and not enough to retire on !!  $100. is about right !!
