Title: Crystalware HELP!!
Post by: ChrisRomano on November 02, 2014, 01:53:15 PM
My great uncle just passed and my mother and I are trying to sell his estate.  He came straight off the boat from Germany and has a lot of antiques and plate ware.  One set we are trying to get information on is a set of 140 crystal ware which includes red/white wine glasses, port glasses, water glasses, high/low ball, shot glasses, juice glasses, pitchers, etc... We don't really know what we're look at and hoping for some outside help so we don't get low balled when trying to sell them.  They all have the same flower pattern.

Have you looked carefully on the bottom for a makers name ?? May be small and hard to see !!

The only one that has a logo on it is the small vase, and its Anchor Hocking, but none of the other glasses has that.

Can you post a pic of the Anchor Hocking mark on the bottom and a pic of the vase that has the mark ??  Could be wrong but the pattern on the other pieces does not look like anything I have seen by AH !!  Would like to compare them !!

I haven't seen this pattern either!  Beautiful.  Even has the sherbet glasses!  Looking.

Just trying to figure if the leaves are representing wheat or stemmed leaves for the flower.

They look like wheat.  Not all the stems have flowers attached, some are just topped with a little leaf.  Any idea of a price range for this set?

Not until we figure out exactly what you have !!

I would describe your glass as ..... "wheel cut" crystal stemware ....... and therein is the "problem" ....... because the decorator(s)  cutting the "pattern", more often than not, did not work for the company that produced the glass.

This person said it better than I could ...... in response to a similar query, to wit:

Quote
Your stems were gray/wheel cut so even if the manufacturer of the glass could be determined, it most likely won't help with who decorated the glass or a pattern name even if there was one. Gray/wheel cut patterns are almost impossible to ID.

Manufacturers did do this type of decoration and except for the ones they did most didn't have names.  They were easily copied by the different decorating firms, of which there were many both large and small.  There hasn't been sufficient demand by the collecting community combined with the lack of uniqueness of design to entice anyone into taking the effort to document the designs, and who did them, ........

http://community.ebay.com/t5/Archive-Pottery-Glass-Porcelain/Glass-Crystal-Stemware-ID-Maker-amp-Pattern/td-p/18505187 (http://community.ebay.com/t5/Archive-Pottery-Glass-Porcelain/Glass-Crystal-Stemware-ID-Maker-amp-Pattern/td-p/18505187)

;D ;D I've met a couple gals that could "cut" about any pattern or design you wanted cut on a piece of glass. They worked for one of those "decorating firms" and that's all they did all day long.

And ps, that most probably explains why you have one (1) piece of "marked" AH glass in your collection.

This is a wheel cut pattern. There was a lot of it made by AH and other companies often marketed to the upscale hotel/restaurant industry as well as homeowners. The pieces appear pretty sturdy and chip resistant The fact that the champagne glasses are flutes and not saucers makes me feel that the set is on the  newer side. It is going to be difficult but KC is on a roll and will probably get lucky again.

Both posts are true !! Therein lies the problem with ID`ing sets as this one !! So even if AH made the glass itself it is highly unlikely they did the decoration !!  I have found  none similar by AH or any other mfr !!  These could have been a special order by any number of restaurants, hotels or individuals !!  I would look at your family connections to see if any associations would give you a hint !!

"therein lies the problem" haha, the only ones that would have known about this set and where it came from would have been my great uncle and aunt, who sadly without a seance cannot be asked.  So pretty much a good conclusion would be that these so cut buy a company, not necessarily AH?

That would be my opinion !! Nothing I have found by AH is even similar to these !!  Sad that we can`t ask where they came from !! That's why it is so important to get the details before our relatives pass on !!

Anchor Hocking did produce some wheel cut patterns like Swedish Modern. Here is a set by for sale that is similar in pattern to yours

I found that one myself frogpatch and it frustrates me because you can see from the cuts/style/etching it is made from around that time.  They had some like this at the antique store near my home that I was at yesterday.  It was labeled as Elegant glassware by Libby in the Halifax pattern.

So the what is more important, Who designed the glasses, or the glasses itself?
Title: Re: Crystalware HELP!!
Post by: mart on November 08, 2014, 12:01:37 PM
Neither would be more important than the other as far as value !! AH made a lot of glassware so it is not rare or expensive and not old enough to be collectable as such !! Value depends on who is looking for a set like this !! Selling as a set would likely not bring as much as if broken up and sold in smaller increments but a lot more trouble for you !!

Totally agree with Mart.  Selling it in smaller bits will bring more.
