Looking at purchasing this piece which was part of an estate sale from a local congressman. Any clue as how old it could be? They are asking $350.00 which I think is a bit high but wanted some opinions from folks who know more about these items

I would call that a "combination" (secretary desk / bookcase). Most probably date back to the 1900 - 1920 era, and were made from oak and oak veneer. I would think $350 is a realistic retail price in today's market.

Thanks Rauville! I wanted to use it as a dresser but I don't think it's got a lot of room for that sort of use. It's definitely a cool & unique piece!

I agree with that era but can`t see enough to tell its original use !! I do not think you would be happy with this piece as a dresser !! Nice oak dressers with mirrors usually run between $150. and $250. !! This one looks like it would be inconvenient for that use !! However if you need a bar it would be perfect with a little alteration !!

I, on the other hand, have come to know these as a Antique "Side-by-Side". The combinations are known for a secretary/bookcase/china cabinet. Just search that and you will see a bunch!
I could see using that in a bedroom easily! In fact, I have seen it used in several homes on the "tour of homes" over the years. Seen them in original wood finish. Seen them painted with chalk paint and the back side of the "china/bookcase" lined with decorative paper to kick it up a notch!

Yes, we called them side by side secretary bookcases. Everyone above is correct in what they are saying. Usually oak and oak veneer for the desk front and glass frame. Elaborate carved pieces bring up to 1500.00 but simple ones like yours are in the $300 to $500 range where I live.

;D ;D The curved glass in the door is worth $150.
