I know these are not antique but they are driving me crazy. They are clearly marked and the translation means fabricated in France. Hand Made. The name Mariposa is familiar to me as a California Pottery. Incised prior to firing is a name on the side which a can't make out. I search these on Google and nothing tha even resembling them comes up. The body is soft terra cotta, sort of like a flower pot and the white glaze is fairly brittle not tough like salt glaze. The lid on the oval piece fits poorly. We would like to use them in the oven for casseroles but we are afraid they would get ruined or even break. If I can't use them they are going to the thrift store. My wife found them at a synagogue rummage sale in a very affluent area. I like to buy at rummage sales and donate the items to the Goodwill Store. You help two places for one price plus whoever buys them and the environment. But if I can use them I will. I am sorry but the site is only letting me load one picture per post

Here you go Frogpatch !! Nice stuff !!

I am sorry Mart but I don't see any resemblance between those and mine. Those are solid and sleek with a hard smooth finish. Mine are soft red clay with a rough, brittle glaze. The lid on the one piece does not even fit well. Am I missing something?

Look at the name scratched into it,, Emile Henry !! They have other earthenware types !!
-
The name does look like it. They are so fragile I would be afraid to use it. i think I will try contacting the company,
Thanks Mart! You are the best!
-
They are supposed to be some of the best and guaranteed not to chip or crack,,goes from freezer to oven !! Wonder if they faked them since yours are brittle ?? They are a bit pricey !!
-
What is really confusing is the name Mariposa on the bottom
-
Knockoff?
-
I looked and the other piece has a completely different signature on incided under the glaze. They clearly say Mariposa. Above says fabrique in France and under says fait a la main. I do not see any resemblance to Emile Henry pieces. A knock off would at least try to look real. I think that the one signature resembles the name Emile Henry but really says something else. The other is completely different. I am going to give them to the thrift shop. If I try to use them the covers will fall off and break. They are made very poorly.

Sorry that they are so fragile!
Like the looks of them!
You have such a good heart tho! (http://)

The Emile Henry site says that each piece is initialed by the person that finishes them !!
-
I am curious what made you feel they were Emile Henry to begin with Mart?
-
Most likely because of the signed pieces and French origin! :)
-
I could read part of what is on the side !! I had looked at some Emile Henry cookware a while back when searching for a dutch oven for my daughter !! Couldn`t afford his stuff !! $80. is a little much !! And it was a small one !!
-
My wife found a le Creuset dutch oven for a few dollars in white. When I ruined it, they replaced it for free. I have s few cast iron dutch ovens. I love them. Except for the oval one by Paula Deen. That one was brand new at a rummage sale for 2.00. Someone dumped it when she got in trouble. It is taking up too much room here and never gets used. Off to the thrift store I guess.

LOL !! Maybe I should hang my shingle out !! Marts Thrift Store !!
