Title: bookends?

I'd like all your ideas on these-age, what the material is=not pottery resin?  Are they planters?  What would you use them for other than bookends?

crap I just noticed I put the same pic twice-

here's a set? 

they feel rather waxy-any ideas why material they are made of?
