Title: Small screw top Box Intriguing
Post by: wilhenri on January 07, 2015, 07:26:01 AM
Saw this in a charity shop and it just intrigued because of its quality  and the lettering is very well done for such a small item for a " spare spring" . the letters in the middle look like C R with a crown but I cant think this is as early as Charles 1 or 2 perhaps a trademark.

Wilhenri,

What a gorgeous box.  Great workmanship put into such a utilitarian article.  I gather you are in the UK?
Did it still have a spring inside? What did you pay for it?   I have seen long wooden tubes with a screw top between 2 to 3 inches in height and short wide ones with an 1" to 3" diameter but nothing as tiny as your's.  Great find.

Wonderful box.

I know they used to make some mighty nice ones to hold extra parts for early music players, automatons,  etc.

Does the top fit on the box and cover up the wording?  Or, is that the bottom?

Hi yes I am in the UK. The top has the wording and it screws on to the bottom it would actually make a nice snuff box. There was no spring inside sadly as they may have helped identify the thing. I had a dice inside and it came with two leather dice shaker cups. I think all unrelated cost me Five pounds. I have something else I will post shortly similar theme
