With the crackeled surface I rather think it is some kind of glazed pottery or porcelain. Maybe it is Chinese, I don't know for sure, but I guess it is not old but rather a modern decorative piece with an artificially dirtied bottom.

You are right Mat !! Couldn`t enlarge the pic earlier but finally got enough of it to see the crackle surface !! Pottery of some type !!
