Title: Tall Boy valuation
Post by: Helenalw on February 09, 2015, 09:08:00 PM: Hi is anyone able to give me a rough valuation for this Tall boy? (pic attached).
I am trying to sell it for my parents but I have no idea what it would be worth (if anything). It has been in the family for many years and my mum tells me it belonged to her grandparents and is from Victorian era. I would love to keep it myself, but I now live over the other side of the world and the cost of shipping it here would be too high so I said I would try to help them sell it.
It is solid, made from hard wood, Mahogany I think, and is in pretty good condition, although a new varnish at some point would bring out the best in it.
Any help would be much appreciated.

It is in Suffolk UK. Originally it would have come from Scarborough in Yorkshire.

Post by: mart on February 12, 2015, 04:48:12 PM: I don`t know how UK prices compare to ours in the U.S.,, some say lower,, some say about the same !! I would say due to its simple styling which would let it blend with many styles today and the fact that its a highboy which gives more storage in the same space,, it would bring around $400. USD !! Could be a few dollars difference either way but that would be in the ballpark !!

Post by: mart on February 12, 2015, 07:11:47 PM: Just use a little Old English dark on it and it will shine like a new one !! Do not re-varnish it or polish the hardware !! That would reduce any value it may have in the future !! Just a good shining up/buffing is all it needs !! Old English is a scratch cover as well as a polish !! It will hide and blend all the little dings it may have and will not hurt the potential value !! Every antique shop I have ever been in has a bottle of Old English hidden somewhere !!

Post by: mart on February 15, 2015, 11:11:18 AM: No problem at all !! You can use the Old English on any dark wood as long as it doesn`t have a wax on it like they used to use beeswax !! It won`t hurt the furniture with a wax finish but it will remove the wax !!
